Belgian Foundries
As a supplier, the foundry industry plays a strategic role in the economic tissue: its markets
range from the automotive sector, mechanical engineering, building and road construction,
offshore, defence, ... to art castings and precision parts for the electronics and medical sectors.
At the end of 2013, this sector represented 27 companies totalling a turnover of
420 million euro and a workforce of 2,169 people.
The sector markets a wide range of castings, from a few grams with extremely tight
tolerances to huge units of several tonnes and this with unmatched flexibility in terms of
design freedom, as well as in an almost unlimited range of alloys.
Two main prerequisites must be met to produce a quality casting: a sound design and
the selection of an alloy that is adapted to the operating conditions and loads. If optimum
customisation is to be achieved, close cooperation between product developer and founder
is more than ever necessary, right from the design stage.
Each foundry develops its own alloys to give the required properties to the requested
products, focusing on niche markets. Nowadays, the emergence of rapid prototyping
techniques and computer-aided design of casting systems allow the sector to deliver high
quality products and improve its profitability.
