HAPPY NEW YEAR
A very happy New Year to all our readers, contributors and
advertisers.
Looking forward to 2015:
We’re all looking forward to The Panto which this year is Jack in the Beanstalk and
promises to be great fun. See our full report on page 11.
Local Youth Clubs under threat from funding shortage: The coming year does
not look too bright for BGYC (the youth club). The BIG Mag has heard that a shortage
of funds mean that BG15UP has now closed so there will be no further meetings for
children aged15+ on Mondays. If you have a view about this you can write us a letter
to [email protected]
Music Festival Returns: It’s back this Summer, Barns Green Music Festival 2015,
Sunday 12th July. Make sure you put the date in your diary! Yes, the Music Festival
will return to the village; look out for regular updates in the BIG Mag. Ironically the
current music festival logo looks identical to the Barns Green Youth Club logo. Back
to the drawing board folks!

St Nicolas Church - Thoughts from your Lay Reader.
There is no Rector at St Nicolas Church, Itchingfield
at the moment. Carol Shepherd is the Lay Reader.
I hope you have all enjoyed the festive
celebrations and are looking forward to what 2015
has in store.
None of us know what lies ahead, but with family
and friends to help and share in our lives, every
day can become an adventure.
The one thing I can be sure of is that whatever I
do has an effect on the people around me.
Hopefully, most of it is beneficial and worth doing.
Carol Shepherd
Each day is a day to learn something new. It
always amazes me how little I know, but also I sometimes can come up
with something I didn’t know I knew. At the back of my mind a memory,
idea or word comes to the front and I find it is just at the right moment and
time.
As human beings, we are intricately made. There is no power on earth that
can just bring a person into being. Whether you believe in God’s creation,
the ‘big bang’ theory or the theory of evolution, we are finitely made. For
me as a Christian, I can only thank God for all the beauty around me. I do
believe He created every living thing, and one day I will see Him face to
face. Until then, I hope that what I do and say will be in line of His will for
me.
At this time of year, many people make a ‘new year’ promise. I don’t
because I know I will fail. We all fail to keep the standards God wants or
us, but through His precious Son, Christ Jesus, we can be forgiven and
have a new start, trying not to do the same thing again. It’s not always
easy, but knowing there is a forgiving, loving Father to say ‘’Well done, thy
good and faithful servant’’ at the end of my life is what I am striving for. Are
you?
With love in Christ Jesus, Carol

Closing 2014 BGRFC see themselves very close to the top of Sussex League
Division Two West and with a squad stronger than many previous years. There is also
an exciting brand of rugby being played on a regular basis and even the loss to
retirement of Martin 'Wasi' Barrett through injury has not stemmed the desire to run
the ball and pass to those in better positions on the field! Rugby is built on packs and
currently we have a strong and mobile one, we are genuinely worth a look, up above
Muntham House School a little way back along the lane towards Itchingfield, please
walk up and see us, don't drive, we keep cars to the absolute minimum required for
safety purposes.
The loan of a space for this local pitch by Peter and Anita Burdfield, the generosity of
our sponsors such as 'A Team Mechanics' coupled with our Vice Presidents and other
friends, plus the support from the Sports and Social club and football club to help us
with changing facilities for home games means that there is a great deal of local
collaboration, all of which we are indebted to, that is enabling the Club to thrive and
prosper-the manner in which we are playing is, we hope, just reward for such great
support.
Pop up and watch us play in the New Year, you might be surprised! Any problems
with directions contact email: [email protected] or 07860 666614.

Itchingfield Primary School Governors’ Report – Autumn Term 2014
Brief highlights from Governors at Itchingfield School in the Autumn term.
The school has three key priorities for 2014/2015 for which Governors hold the school
strongly to account. These are writing, the new Government curriculum, and ensuring
that there is no adverse impact on pupils’ learning during the transition to the Barns
Green site.
The new National Curriculum poses numerous challenges for pupils. While
calculators have been removed from the maths curriculum, computer programming
has been introduced for seven year-olds. The state-of-the-art computer equipment in
the new build will help children tackle this even more effectively. The curriculum also
sees new ways of assessing and measuring success. To ensure accurate
assessments across local Primary schools, Itchingfield has become a centre of
excellence. Mrs Aitken is a lead locality moderator with the school hosting meetings
to moderate judgments.
Writing is a continuing area of improvement and a number of initiatives are being
pursued. Following consultation with parents, the Talk 4 Writing scheme has been
introduced ensuring that children learn a large bank of templates for many types of
text. ‘Before’ and ‘after’ comparisons of writing demonstrate the success of this
approach. Moreover the School Council has researched the school’s history and
written to local historian Mary Hallett.
The annual review of the school’s results was held in the presence of Governors and
an independent advisor to review progress and attainment at all Key Stages and set
pupil targets for 2014/2015. The good news is that, based on the current data,
Itchingfield School would be classed as ‘‘Good'' by OfSted and the impact of excellent
teaching and management on the children has been significant. Overall progress in
maths and reading is good.
On the subject of the new school build, the plan is to move in around Easter. Thanks
to strong direction from Governors and Headteacher, the building work has not had
any impact on pupils’ learning. Indeed, regular visits from the builders and the
creation of ‘peepholes’in the hoardings have instead helped capture the interest of the
children as they watch their new school grow from a muddy hole in the ground.
The school and Governors continue to support investing in staff development. Ms
Maurice is making substantive progress towards the National Qualification for
Headship, Mrs Coxon is studying School Business Management and Mr Simmons is
moving the school towards the ‘Investors in People’ award. New performance
management systems is driving alignment for all staff in the interest of every single
child.
Traditional pursuits have not been forgotten and the children benefitted from a visit to
Fishbourne Roman Palace to support History. The arts received a boost with the
appointment of Mrs Harding whose work on music culminated in an outstanding
Nativity play in the village hall in front of a packed audience. Parental comments
were extremely positive and we thank the many people who supported this fantastic,
joyous, uplifting event.

On 1st January 1915, H.M.S Formidable, a British battleship on exercises in the
English Channel, was hit by two torpedoes from a German submarine and in the
appalling January weather in the channel, 550 of the ships complement of 780 were
lost. Life boats overturned in the mountainous seas and men drowned or died from
exposure in the cold water. Because the ships were already on alert for U-boats the
accompanying cruisers were not allowed to stop to try and rescue survivors. The
Captain and his pet dog, in true Royal Navy fashion, both went down with the ship.
The body of the dog was washed ashore and is buried in Abbotsbury Gardens in
Dorset.
The loss of the Formidable was a huge shock to the
British, who still believed their Navy was utterly
invincible and the reports made the front pages of
the papers such as Daily Mirror. On board
Formidable was George Fuggles, a Royal Marine.
George had followed in his father’s footsteps and
joined the Marines as a bugler in 1905, when he
was just 15 and by 1915 he was a Corporal.
George’s death was reported in the Itchingfield
Parish Magazine;
Great sympathy is felt on all sides for Sergeant and
Mrs Fuggles of Christ's Hospital, whose second son,
George, went down on New Year’s Day with H.M.S.
Formidable. He was well known in Itchingfield, being
for several years a member of our church choir. And
a general favourite. He died gallantly at the post of
duty, as an Englishman should die, and we pray that
God will comfort those who are left to mourn his loss.
H.M.S Formidable
George’s body was never found and the family added an
inscription to remember George on the gravestone of their
daughter Coronella, who had died in 1909, aged just seven.
The inscription to George reads;
Also of our dear son George F Fuggles Corp RMLI born
16 November 1890 lost his life at sea in the Great War on HMS
Formidable 1st January 1915
"The Lord has said mine own will I bring again as I did some
time from the deep"
George Fuggles

fundraising committee we would like to say a massive
thank you for all your help and support throughout

the last 9 months alone! In 2015 we will continue to
hold events so keep looking in the Big Mag as to when
they will be on. Once again thank you for all your

Members hear the biography of Father Christmas from
Rupert Matthews
Father Christmas, as we know him, appeared in pre-medieval times as the
god Geol, who arrived on earth on the longest night of the year, remaining
for seven days. By the 15th century be became 'Old Man Winter'. Later he
became 'Lord Christmas' presiding over the festivities for the nobility.
Banned by the Puritans, he returned as Father Christmas in Cromwell's
time. The Dutch, colonising America, took him to New Amsterdam (New
York) where as St.Nicholas he gave gifts to the poor on his birthday. In
1892 in cartoons by Thomas Nast he was shown wearing a hat. The
advent of colour printing in 1932 gave Coca Cola the opportunity to use the
Father Christmas figure wearing their colours of red and white in their
advertisements. After the war Father Christmas was known world-wide and
became the symbol of the winter season.
Our Christmas Meeting:
Fourteen of us went to Random Hall in December for our Christmas lunch.
We enjoyed a delicious festive meal followed by mince pies and coffee. We
collected money from our raffle and also gave donations into a Christmas
stocking which we will be sending to the Queen Alexandra Hospice for
ex-servicemen in Worthing.
New programme:
We have a new programme of meetings for 2015, which are usually in the
Village Hall at 2.30pm on the third Thursday each month. Please see the
Contacts Page for W.I. number for more details.

Bell ringing:
A sociable, interesting, worthwhile hobby.
Looking for a sociable hobby? Interested in learning a
new skill? Would like to contribute to village life?
Then you may enjoy becoming one of our bell ringers.
We ring the ancient bells at the lovely St Nicolas
church which can be found up the hill at Itchingfield.
We have a very friendly, mixed band of ringers from
age 10 to – well, more mature should we say! We
enjoy ringing here and at other churches, going on
outings, social occasions and eating cake, not to
mention chilling after practice in the village pub!
Bell ringing is suitable for any and all ages and is ideal
as a family activity. (Children are generally tall enough to learn to ring successfully
from around 10 years old.) Ringing is great fun and unlike most worthwhile skills,
ringing tuition comes entirely free!
We meet for practice on a Friday evening from 7.00 – 9.00 pm. We also ring from
10.30 – 11.00 a.m. most Sunday mornings, though attending services for which you
ring is not required.
If you are interested in finding out more, please contact
Val Atkins, Ringing Master on 01403 217639, [email protected] or
Miriam Coghill, Tower Captain, 01403 730065, [email protected]
or just turn up on a Friday evening any time between 7.00 and 9.00 pm.
