Blazer Bulletin
January/February 2015
From the Desk of the Principal
I would like to wish all of the families of CSHS a joyous holiday season and Happy New Year.
My hope is that over the winter break you have the opportunity to relax and enjoy time with family
& friends.
Just a reminder – January 21st is the start of Semester II classes; however, students will continue in
their year-long core courses. It is important that students continue to work hard each day to be
successful in all of their classes, both semester I and year-long.
ParentVue
As you know, ParentVue is a program that allows both the parent to access to his/her grades
throughout the school year. All parents and students who have not signed up for a ParentVue
account still have the opportunity to do so. Teachers update grades a minimum of twice a month.
Parents can even access their child’s grades on their Smartphone through an app. As a parent with
three children in WCPS system I think this is an awesome tool to keep up-to-date on their
progress. If you have any questions regarding ParentVue, please call the CSHS Counseling Center
at 301.766.8085.
As a side-note: Please remember to keep all contact information (e.g., email, cell phone numbers)
current as many of our school announcements and information is sent via technology. If you need
to provide an update, please email Ms. Babbie at [email protected] or call 301.766.8085
or you can update via ParentVue.
Blazer Block
Students should continue to use this valuable time to get caught up on studies, complete homework
or receive additional help from any of their teachers. This is a unique opportunity offered each day
to students so they can be successful in all of their classes.
Graduation Update
Students will be meeting with Mr. Greg Miller, Herff Jones representative, on Jan 12th to get
information regarding graduation caps, gowns and announcements. This will also be the time that
students will see the new gown designed specifically for CSHS Students. As stated in the last
newsletter this year the students will be starting a new tradition-which actually is an old traditionof renting their gowns. The senior class voted on this earlier this year and the gowns look
awesome!
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
The following attendance guidelines apply to all WCPS students:
• For state reporting a student is counted present if he/she attends 4 hours or more of the school day. If the student attends 2
hours or more, but less than four hours, he/she is counted present for a half day. If a student arrives at school after a school
day has begun during any full school day, but attends four hours or more that day, the student is coded as tardy.

• All absences are coded as lawful (excused) or unlawful (unexcused).
• Lawful absences include: 1) Illness of student (written parent note required upon return. Three or more days may require
medical verification); 2) Death in the immediate family, 3) Court summons, 4) Suspension, and 5) Other special circumstances.
• Unlawful absences include: 1) Missing the bus; 2) Oversleeping; 3) Car problems
When the combined absences reach 6 days per semester (12 absences for the school year), only official/legal documentation
will be accepted as excused absences (i.e., doctor notes and/or legal summons).
NOTE: Failure to provide a parent note and/or doctor note will result in the absence being coded as unexcused.
When your child is absent from school, we ask that you notify the Attendance Office to make us aware. If we do not receive a
call from you, we will call you to verify their absence for that day.

•Family vacation absences: Vacations or trips during the school year are strongly discouraged, as the loss of class time may
have a negative impact on the student’s academic progress and record. It is also recognized that on some occasions, working
parents have little control over the time of year when vacations may be taken. Family vacation absences are considered lawful
only if they have prior written approval of the principal and do not exceed three days per school year. Written requests must
be made at least ten days in advance of the requested vacation absence. If approved, students are responsible for
requesting assignments. Teachers need at least four days’ notice for preparation of student materials.
• Approved college visitations: A college visit for students in grades 11 and 12 who pre-schedule the visitation with the
principal’s approval shall be considered an extension of the student’s program and not count as an absence. No more than
three college visitation days shall be approved per school year. Pre-approved absences related to recruitment or enlistment in
the military will be considered in the same manner as approved college visitation.
Prior approval forms are available in the Main Office.
SPORTS AND ATTENDANCE
As per County Policy, students are expected to be present in school all day on the day of an extra-curricular activity in
order to participate. Additionally, student must be on time for school all day the day following an extra-curricular
activity in order to participate in the next scheduled event.
ILLNESS DURING THE SCHOOL DAY
*Students who become ill during the school day and wish to go home must report to the Health Room and allow school
personnel to contact the parent/guardian. Students are not permitted to us a cell phone to call parent for pick up!

CSHS LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER NEWS
Our new eBook collection has arrived. Access to the WCPS “FollettShelf” eBook collection is at:
https://wbb50200.follettshelf.com
Students will need to download the BryteWave K-12 Edition app to their device. Username is the
student’s school computer login and the password is their student ID number. eBooks are checked out
for 2 weeks and can be renewed online through the student’s account.
Student Research
As students are doing research, it is important that they are using credible, academic sites for their
information. Washington County Public Schools provides subscription databases for student use 24 hours
a day, 365 days a year. These databases can be easily accessed from the library’s homepage https://wcpsmd.follettdestiny.com
Usernames and passwords are needed for access outside of school. Students can get a database card
from the library for the usernames and passwords. In addition to information from newspapers,
magazines, academic journals, and books; many of these databases contain videos and animations,
ebooks, world newspapers, presidential papers, interviews, images, political cartoons, National Public
Radio broadcasts, etc., and are updated daily.
The Washington County Free Library also offers over 80 different databases for Washington County
residents to use. These require a free WCFL account number that can be obtained by filling out an
application at any WCFL branch. There is a link on the schools’ library homepage to the WCFL databases.
Please see Mrs. Davidson if you have issues using any of our resources.
