- 7 - THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH
FAITH FORMATION
FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY OF
JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH
Jesus was raised in a devout Jewish
family, and they followed the traditions of
visiting the Temple for holidays,
presenting their son to the community
when he reached a certain age, and
raising him in the faith. Taking time to
celebrate this feast highlights the essential role of the family in a
child’s life and in the life of the Church.
BEFORE MASS….
Who were Jesus’s parents? Do you think he had to go to church
with them?
ON THE WAY HOME FROM MASS….
We call families the “domestic Church” because the family is one
important place where people learn about our faith and Catholic
traditions. How do you learn about our faith, prayer, and Catholic
traditions in your family?
In his 2015 Message for the World Day of Peace (January 1),
Pope Francis urges us to recognize the "equal dignity" of our
brothers and sisters who are enslaved and exploited and to work
to end human trafficking, trade in migrants and prostitutes, slave
labor, and the enslavement of women and children. For
information on the World Day of Peace, go to: http://
www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/human-life-and-dignity/war-and
-peace/world-day-of-peace.cfm
LIVE THE WORD….
Draw a family tree and go back as far as you can with knowledge
of both sides of your family. Add open stops for your children’s
future families. Talk about the faith of your family members,
dating back in time. Tell your children as much as you know and
show them “artifacts” that you might have like a rosary that
belonged to your grandmother. If some of your family members
are not Catholic, take some time to learn about other religions.
ATTENTION INACTIVE CATHOLICS
Those who wish to return to our Catholic faith because of
inactivity or some other misunderstanding or hurt,
please call Mike MacDonald at 352-350-8038 or
email at [email protected]. The
least we can do is talk about it and explore ways of returning to
the faith, at your convenience.
Annulment issues can be discussed and remedies
explored.
Notes from Jackie Lee,
Youth Minister
Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. While we
have a Mother’s Day and a Father’s Day, there is no Hallmark
holiday set aside for Family Day or Parent’s
Day. What could you do today to honor your
family? In a time when actually spending
quality time with people seems hard, find a
way to make that happen, at least for today.

Prayer for Families before your evening meal today.
PRAYER FOR FAMILIES
We bless your name, O Lord,
for sending your own incarnate Son,
to become part of a family,
so that, as he lived its life,
he would experience its worries and its joys.
We ask you, Lord,
to protect and watch over this family,
so that in the strength of your grace
its members may enjoy prosperity,
possess the priceless gift of your peace,
and, as the Church alive in the home,
bear witness in this world to your glory.
We ask this though Christ our Lord.
Amen.
