Mission Statement
The Divine Providence Faith Community is called to know Christ
and to make Christ known. We worship God, we teach our faith
and we share our love and our life with all of God’s people.

2nd Sunday of Advent
Feast of the Immaculate Conception
On Monday, December 8, 2014 the Church
honors Mary’s Immaculate Conception. The solemnity
of the Immaculate Conception is a holy day of obligation. Three Masses are scheduled for Monday: 7:00 &
9:00AM and 6:30PM.
The History and Theology of the Immaculate
Conception
On December 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX issued
his Apostolic Constitution, Ineffabilis Deus (meaning
God is ineffable or incapable of being expressed in
words are the first two words of the Constitution).
The document clearly states the Blessed Virgin Mary
from the moment of her conception in the womb of
Anne was given the gift of a singular grace, whereby
she was spared from inheriting original sin. The singular grace was only extended to the Mother of God.
Because of the rebellion of Adam and Eve, sin
entered the world and was passed on to every subsequent generation much like the physical characteristics
or DNA is passed down from parents to their children. Because of original sin and every sin thereafter
committed, the world and its people must experience
death, contrary to the original plan of God.
To remedy the harshness of the penalty and
the futility which death brings, God sent his Son to
assume humanity and pay the price of atonement with
His own life, in order to satisfy the debt of sin. But an
ordinary person could not pay the price; the only person who has the power to remit sin is God. If only
God remitted the sin, the human being would only be
forgiven vicariously much like the animal sacrificed
yearly on the Day of Atonement. In order for the
complete remittance, the sacrifice must be accomplished by a human, but a human who was not guilty
of sin himself. God’s remedy to this conundrum was
to send His Son (God) to be born (Jesus) of a human
woman (Mary) without the stain of sin. Therefore, the
Mother of God must also have to be free from sin in
order to bring forth Jesus who was sinless. Pope Pius
IX explains this great mystery:
The Most Blessed Virgin Mary was,
from the first moment of her conception,
by a singular grace and privilege
of almighty God
and by the virtue of the merits of
Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race,
preserved immune from all stain of original sin.

December 7, 2014
The next time you hear or read the Gospels of
Luke, or say the “Hail Mary” remember the words that
Archangel Gabriel proclaimed, “Hail Mary full of
grace, the Lord is with you”. The words from Gabriel
imply Mary was free from all sin, original and personal
because the Lord was with her in all her purity.
Judaic theology is clear on the disparity between God who is all holy and human beings who
only share in his holiness. Because of the difference it
was also thought a human being would be annihilated
if he came face to face with God. The scripture confirms the holiness of Mary by stating clearly and unambiguously the Lord was with her, clearly implying Mary
was without sin and could be completely present in
holiness itself.
It’s Not Too Late to Join in
Advent Scripture Reflections and
Evening Vespers
If you have considered doing
something extra during Advent, commit
to attending morning Advent reflection (Tuesdays after the 7:30AM Mass) and Wednesday Evening Vespers and Benediction (Wednesdays at 7:00PM7:30PM) or both.
The prayers recited at evening vespers are primarily the psalms prayed often by Jesus while on
earth. The Vespers are followed by a short time for
adoration and concludes with Benediction. If you
have never experienced evening Vespers, you will find
out it is a half hour well worth your time. Please take
time to fit in the additional spiritual opportunities offered during Advent.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Have you seen Antiques Roadshow on television? People bring attic treasures to experts for appraisal and possible cash. Catholic attics, or maybe
Grandma's wall, often hold a "sick call crucifix."It
is a curiously bulky crucifix hiding a sliding panel
and a secret compartment. Two tiny candles, a
squeeze bottle of holy water, a stringy purple ministole, a tube of prayers, and some cotton balls are
all hidden inside. The cross folds up to form a mini
-altar that can be propped up by a sick person's
bed. All that is needed is a priest with the oil of the
sick and Holy Communion. Forty years ago, when
these crosses enjoyed great popularity, the sacrament of the sick was often an encounter between
priest and sick person alone, and often only in a
last crisis of illness.
Gradually, we are reclaiming the sacrament of
anointing from this minimal, hidden expression.
It is celebrated more richly and more often, even
in the Sunday assembly, at every stage of illness
and across a wide range of human suffering. The
"sick call crucifix" is not a tradition, it is a curiosity from another time, but it reminds us of true
tradition: we are a people who care for our sick,
who accompany them in faith, and who sustain
them with an experience of Christ's presence.

EXILE
Both Isaiah and Peter had the task of comforting
and encouraging their communities during times of
exile. The Israelites were in geographic exile from Israel; to them this was, in effect, the same as being in
exile from their God.
The early Christians, following the Resurrection,
expected an immediate return of Christ in glory; they,
too, felt in "exile" as the delay of the Second Coming
grew longer and longer.
All four of scripture's authors today-Isaiah, the
psalmist, Peter, and Mark, hasten to help us see
things in God's terms, not ours. They want us to know
that we can never truly be exiled from God, or from
God-among-us, since we know that when the faithful
are gathered, Christ has come into their midst.
Instead, we are encouraged today to do what we
can from our end to shorten the time of our exile: to
repent for our sins, to return our lives to the Lord, to
live as people who seek the coming day of the Lord,
when "kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace
shall kiss" (Psalm 85:10). Copyright© J. S. Paluch Co.

HONORING THE GRIEVING HEART
Saturday 9- noon Dec. 13
Grief and loss come to us in many forms. There is no
need to compare one person’s loss with another’s, as
each of us is on his/her own way, working to integrate
personal sorrows and joys into the people we are becoming. Join Joy Davy, MS, LCPC, NCC, for a morning dedicated to sending healing energy to our grieving
hearts. Explore without judgment all the emotions of
grief and loss to understand how you have been
“broken open” and changed by your grief. Cost: $35
The Respect Life Committee has some good news to share with you. As a result of your efforts,
the baby-bottle campaign has been a great success. By your generosity the money donated by Divine
Providence to the Women’s Center totaled $5,009. This was accomplished through the hard work on
behalf of all the members of the parish, including the youngsters of our school. Approximately 500
bottles were distributed and almost every bottle was returned. Thank You for participating in this worthwhile
fundraiser. Your spare change has saved a life.

STEWARDSHIP
“Prepare the way of the Lord…”
Mark 1:3
We are all called to live a holy life.
We are all called to invite others to
live holy lives. Living a stewardship lifestyle, being
grateful and generous with our gifts, does just that—
it puts us on the path to holiness and it invites others to be holy, too.
