Inside this issue:
CWSC Members and Supporters:
Welcome back to another swimming season. I hope everyone had a nice
summer. CWSC finished last season in a blaze of glory, as the top London club
at British Youth Nationals in August, coming 19th in the country, the highest ever
finish for CWSC. The Club won more medals than ever before and had several
top ten finishes in the Age Group Nationals as well. Congratulations to Bram,
Marina, Chris and all our other great coaches--and of course the CWSC
swimmers!
As you will know, this new season has started with training schedules that are
again adjusted to try and optimise our limited pooltime and provide all our
different swimmers good sessions. We appreciate your patience as everyone
adjusts to the new schedules. We have secured training time in the new pool at
Holland Park School, though the pool has not reopened as planned yet, so we
have had to juggle schedules even further. The contractor has been slow to finish
the clean up work at the HPS pool, but the contractor now seems confident the
work can be done by October 13th. Fingers crossed. !
We also are awaiting word from GLL about the training schedule for CWSC at
Kensington Leisure Centre when it reopens in the first part of 2015. CWSC has
been promised at least as much training time at the new KLC as we had in the
old KLC. Given the growth and the success of the Club, we are hopeful for
additional training time. Just last week we had over 125 kids attend assessments
to try and join CWSC; sadly we are only able to accommodate a small portion of
them given our high retention rates and lack of pooltime.

The Annual Club Social in early September was a great way to start the new
season. A mostly sunny afternoon (!) helped fuel the fun for over 200 kids and
adults at Battersea Park's Millenium Arena, where the kids played games, the
adults enjoyed Pimms and all had the chance to taste authentic Philadelphia
Cheesesteaks. If you did not attend this year's Social, be sure to do so next year,
as it is a great way to get to know others in the Club, especially since we are
spread out across ten different pools. A big CWSC thanks to Helene Tagliaferri
and the other volunteers for a super day.
!
Speaking of volunteers, we are in real need of more help, both for meet officials
and for sorts of other administrative and organisational matters. Please email
[email protected] if you can lend a hand, even just a few hours a
month.
!
Please join me in welcoming back Ed Walsh, who grew up swimming for
Westminster Borough Swim Squad before heading to the US to race for the
University of Tennessee, one of the top college swim teams in America. Ed has
joined the CWSC coaching ranks and will focus on the development level
swimmers, while also getting to know some of the older swimmers as well.
!
Finally, I am pleased to report that we have been re-certified again as Swim 21
compliant. This is a real achievement for CWSC and thank you to Jo Wilson for
leading our efforts here. It is a great way for CWSC to start the new season!

Middlesex County ASA Awards! The Middlesex County ASA President Tony Burton came to
Queen Mother in July to present several awards to our swimmers. We are very pleased to announce
the following awards:
• Daniel Leznin: Gold 12 year old boys BAGCAT
• Ben Bradshaw: Bronze12 year old boys BAGCAT
• Clara Von Opel: Doris Sayer Memorial Trophy

Congratulations to the swimmers (pictured right) and a big thank you to Tony who made the journey to visit the Club and
make the presentations.
CWSC Swim21 Accreditation! We are very pleased to announce that the ASA has renewed our swim21 accreditation.
swim21 accreditation is the ASA’s recognised kitemark for the development of effective, ethical
and sustainable affiliated clubs. As you can imagine, it requires a lot of work to pull together all
the documentation in order for the ASA to approve this accreditation. A massive thank you to Jo
Wilson, our welfare officer who took the lead. Jo would like to thank all those who helped her
including the CWSC Committee; our Head Coach Bram Montgomery; and
the ASA Club Development Officer Helen Davis.

Introducing CWSC’s New Lead Development/ Assistant Performance Coach!
!
!
We are very pleased to welcome Ed Walsh to CWSC’s coaching team. He has written a short bio as
an introduction for the newsletter:
I am happy to be back at the Club that started my swimming career. Chelsea and Westminster is not only a swim club, it is
a club that can provide you with many opportunities to reach your ultimate goals. Not only did I have the opportunity to
swim fast here 15 years ago, I also got to meet some amazing people who are still in my life today. My swimming
achievements at the Club consisted of numerous regional medals, county team selections, CWSC swimmer of the year, and
multiple national cuts. After spending my childhood years swimming at the Queen Mother Sports Center, I then decided to
swim for at Camden Swiss Cottage.
!
I enjoyed the many years swimming for Camden, which eventually led me to my dream of gaining a scholarship to swim in
the US. In 2008 I was fortunate to win nationals in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle setting world-class times for an 18
year old. After the year 2008 I decided to go to the US, with the help of Bram, I accepted a scholarship to The University
Of Tennessee.
!
After swimming and studying for four years in the states I earned eight All-America honours, was part of four SEC medal-winning relays, team captain junior
and senior year, CSCAA Academic All-American, and was on the SEC Academic Honour Roll. One of my finest moments swimming for Tennessee was
breaking the 19 second barrier, splitting an 18.84 in the SEC Championships which allowed me to acquire the second fastest freestyle split in Tennessee history.
It was also a great experience to race against many greats today such as Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Nathan Adrian, and Cullen Jones.
!
After finishing my four years of swimming and earning a degree in Communications, I started my coaching career in Knoxville, Tennessee. In the last 18
months I have been able to work with many of the world’s best coaches and swimmers. I have been fortunate to coach U.S National Team Members, Masters
World Champions, and also club kids taking their first strokes as a swimmer. I am excited to share my knowledge at CWSC and work with many great coaches
to help the development of the program. GO CWSC!!
Thank you CWSC Volunteers!
We would like to thank all the CWSC Coaches and volunteers who helped at our recent New Member Assessment. Coaches
Bram, Geoff, Rosie, Julia, John, Tamy, Ryan and Enrico were assisted by Celeste Shirvani, Jo Wilson, Sofia Marcal Whittles, Solmaz
Hirschmann and Suzy Lui. Thanks also to the volunteers who helped at the 100IM Time Trials: Rodney Thomas, Ali Kidd,
Wendi Lewitt, Miles Johnston, Kay Hotta, Martin Whittles, Amelia Winter, Jo Wilson, Tom Massey, Philip Boeckman and Erin
Boeckman.

Leatherhead Summer Open, Dorking
30th June
In what is fast becoming an annual
tradition, over 50 CWSC swimmers and 4
coaches attended the Leatherhead Summer
Open Meet at the Dorking Leisure Centre,
and once again took home the Top Club
Trophy for the 4th successive year! The
Club brought home a massive haul of 55
medals and close to 100 lifetime best times
which was impressive considering the hosts
limited our swimmers to 4-5 races each
(Perhaps they were tired of seeing us at the
medal table!). Gold medal winners on the day included
Madalena Marcal Whittles, Natasha
Tagliaferri, Anna Stevens, Lola Stevens,
Charlotte O’Leary, Blake Morris-Jones,
Thea Krumins, Chantelle Jeffers-Bobo,
Pietro Ferrerasi, and Olivia Boeckman. The club would like to say a special thank
you to the parents who volunteered on
poolside throughout the day and as always a
big thank you to our wonderful hosts in
Surrey.

!
Darmstadt International, Germany
5th, 6th & 7th July
For the 2nd year in a row, swimmers from
CWSC combined with swimmers from
Camden Swiss Cottage to form TEAM
LONDON SC. The new team traveled
together to Germany to race clubs from
Europe and Africa over three days in an
amazing outdoor 10 lane 50m pool. 22
CWSC swimmers made the journey and
represented the club, and our city very well
winning dozens of medals and coming
home with almost 2 dozen PB's. Team
London managed to rack up enough points
across the 3 days to bring home the Top
Visiting Club award, and some of our
swimmers managed to earn quite a few
Euros as prize money was on offer for those
winning medals in the Senior Finals. !
European Junior Championships,
Dordrecht, Netherlands
9th -13th July
As we mentioned in the previous Newsletter,
for the 2nd time in 3 years, CWSC placed a
swimmer onto Team GB! After her
impressive perfor mances at the
Commonwealth Games Selection Trials in
March, Georgina Boyle was selected
to represent Great Britain at the European
Junior Championships in Dordrecht,
Holland. Georgie exceeded expectations by
making the semi final in the 100 Freestyle
were she ended up 12th overall. She
bettered that swim with a 10th place finish
in the 200 Free and was a member of 3 GB
relays that all made it to the Championship
finals, narrowly missing medals on all three
occasions. A huge well done to Georgie on
her international debut.
Results of many
this year) narrowly missing out on the
National Age Group record, and Isabella
Hindley came away with two medals in the
17-18 girls 50 free and 100 free. Alex De
Tullio made the Senior Mens final in the 50
breast and 200 breast, while Andrew
Boeckman and Chloe Close both hit lifetime
best times while qualifying to swim in the
semi-finals of their respective events.
Charlotte Hogarth joined Bella, Georgie
and Chloe on the 4x100 and 4x200 free
relays that both qualified for finals, where
the 4x100 team narrowly missed out on a
medal but did manage to break the London
Region and Middlesex County Senior girls
Records. Alice Read also represented
CWSC, racing valiantly despite serious
ankle damage suffered only 10 days before
the competition. !
Hatfield Summer Spectacular Meet
12th -13th July
Split over two days, with the older
swimmers racing on Saturday and the
younger swimmers racing on Sunday, this
was the first time the Club entered this
exciting event. The older swimmers had an
intense day of racing with heats and finals
in each of the 100m races as well as a great
heats/quarters/semis/finals format for the
50 free. The senior CWSC swimmers raced
incredibly well hitting a huge number of
lifetime bests (a great precursor to things to
come at Nationals) as well as taking home a
number of medals. Isabella Hindley
managed to take home silvers in the 100m
free and 100m back while also wowing the
the crowd with a Victoria in the Grand
Final of the 50m sprint. Her time in the
race (25.49) not only broke her own Club
record, but shattered the Middlesex County
and London Region records as well. Alex
De Tullio easily won the mens 100m
breaststroke while also finding his inner
sprinter taking home a bronze in the mens
50m free Grand Final. (Above National Youth Qualifiers)
The younger swimmers also stepped up at
the Age Group and Open Water Nationals
where Zoe Smith and Elizabeth Boeckman
both came away with top 10 finishes while
the two Daniel's (Petrov and Leznin) both
smashed their PB's and moved up on their
pre-meet rankings. Sophie Whelan and Ben
Bradshaw also swam at Nationals for the
first time, competing in the girls 800
freestyle and the boys 200 IM respectively,
they both narrowly missed out on their best
times. A huge well done to all the swimmers
and thank you to their families for
supporting the swimmers during what was a
very, very long season. !
ASA National Age Group and Youth
Championships, Sheffield
24th July - 4th August
The Club finished the year off in style with
more National medals and finalists then ever
before, and the Youth swimmers managed
to finish 19th in the team standings, by far
the best ranked team in London and
Middlesex. Georgie Boyle defended her
National title in the 200m freestyle (despite
being at the bottom of her 15-16 age group

Coach’s Corner: by Bram Montgomery
I’d like to welcome everyone back to another exciting season. Last year finished on an unbelievable high with some great results at
all of our end of season meets including Leatherhead, Hatfield and of course the ASA National Championships.
The start of a new season is a great time for all the swimmers to set new goals for the upcoming year, begin the process of achieving
those goals in every practice. The first and most important thing everyone has to do it to get to training! You won’t achieve anything
in swimming if you are not showing up. Be on time, be prepared and be willing to challenge yourself every day. As a swimmer you
have to live by all of these things to come close to reaching your potential.
This month I wanted to close the Coaches Corner with an edited version of an article written by Oliver Poirier-Leroy from my
favourite swimming web-site www.swimswam.com
!
Wanna punish those goals this season? Start by unleashing your inner grit in the pool
Here are 5 tips for developing grit in the pool so that you can lay some punishment on your goals this season:
1. Make practice your proving ground.
Many swimmers lament the practice. And it’s understandable. For a couple hours you swim up and down and around a black line,
in sometimes suffocating conditions, swimming until your legs and arms and lungs border on collapsing. What practice is designed
to do is to help you improve specific parts of your performance. It’s an environment where you try and try again, gaining valuable
feedback in the process, and applying that knowledge and skill to further improving.
It’s at times frustrating, and it can become exhausting both mentally and physically – but it is what is required to level up your
swimming.
2. Get vicious with your failures.
How many times have you suffered a setback or failure and taken it personally? Sat back and hated on yourself because your
performance didn’t match expectations? Gritty swimmers aren’t afraid of their failures, and they don’t allow their failures to
dislodge them for any longer than absolutely necessary. They take their failures, rip them apart for any silver linings or feedback,
and paddle on.
3. Chase excellence, not perfection.
Perfection is the antithesis of action. It’s an unattainable ideal that paralyzes and stalls the most well intentioned of swimmers. It is
inflexible, binary and completely and utterly unforgiving.
Gritty swimmers recognize this, and instead hurl themselves forwards in the pursuit of excellence, which is much more forgiving and
allows for the necessary failures and setbacks that promote growth.
4. Keep your promises.
In matters both big and small, stubbornly stick to your promises that you make to others, and especially the ones you make to
yourself. When you keep your word you see things through.
Ever notice that when your word starts to mean less to yourself that you get down on yourself ? Start to doubt that you are capable
to follow through on the things you intend to deliver?
It does matter that you keep your word. When you start to slip in the small promises, you will find that the bigger things will start to
slip through the cracks as well. If you make a promise to do something, fulfil it.
5. Embrace the grind.
You’ve heard this term before. Embracing the grind. Sure, it sounds great on a motivational poster, but what does it really mean?
Many of us have been conditioned to believe that as long as we think positive that success will come to us. This type of empty
positivity might make you feel good for a little while, but it doesn’t reflect the reality of accomplishing difficult things.
Consider the difficulties that lay ahead of you, and prepare for them – whether it’s in having a Plan B for moments of injury, or
setting up a recovery program for yourself for those gruelling weeks of training over the holidays.

Middlesex Development Camp
!
!
On Sunday 21st September Emily Surminski, Emily Campbell-Lamerton, Talia Goodwin, Ro Michaelis and I
(pictured left) went to the Middlesex County Development Camp.
First, we signed in and went poolside for our first session with Bram. After the two hours improving our frontcrawl
we stretched and sat down for our lectures. First, we learnt about nutrition: what we should be eating and when.
Then our second lecture was on how to stop ourselves from being injured, with extra focus on the shoulder. After these
inspiring lectures, we had a break for lunch. Then came a quiz on the bizarre laws of swimming. Who knew one
long whistle meant put your hat and goggles on?? After this came my favourite lecture from a Chelsea and
Westminster swimmer. Georgie Boyle agreed to be the guest lecturer at this event and told us about her journey
through swimming with Bram reminding throughout about her times for certain events. Then came the land training.
We learnt new stretches like the warrior plank, and Spider-Man as well as others. At the end of this we got back in
the pool for a session on improving our I.M then of course, to finish the day we swam fun relays. Thank you to the coaches and speakers for the lectures and
coaching sessions. Thank you to Bram and Georgie Boyle who gave up their time to help inspire us and motivate us for another year of swimming.

London Youth Games - Crystal Palace Sports Centre
Mini - Thursday 3rd July; Youth - Saturday 5th July
The London Youth Games were launched in 1977 to mark the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
The competition has grown into Europe's largest annual youth sports event. 44 former LYG athletes
competed at London 2012, winning 14 medals including 9 gold. And in July, CWSC swimmers
represented the London boroughs of Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea, and Hammersmith and Fulham at this
year's LYG. Herbie Bingham (pictured) represented Westminster in the Mini Youth Games and has written this
report for us:
!
I was pleased to have been selected to represent Westminster for the second year running at the London Mini-youth Games held on Thursday,
3rd July. This competition takes place in the main 50m pool at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, which is a fantastic venue for this meet. All 32
London boroughs compete so it's a large event. The team spirit is very strong and rivalry intense but very friendly and fun at the same time. Interestingly, the
majority of the CWSC swimmers are divided across the boroughs of Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea, which adds further tension, competition and
friendly rivalry within the CWSC camp taking part.
!
In the morning session, swimmers competed in individual events (50m Breast, Back, Fly and Free), whilst the afternoon's session involved two team events
(4x 50m Free and Medley). I had the pleasure of taking part in the 50m Back and the two Medleys. What struck me the most was the incredibly high
standard of swimming that exists right across London, which bears testament to the quality of the clubs they swim for. Westminster finished in joint 11th
place, improving 20 places on the previous year's competition: a very respectable result. I'm sure Westminster will be looking to put out an even stronger team
next year so boroughs beware!
!
!
A big "thank you" goes out to the organisers and the coaches that helped make this such a special day. This is a fun event, with a great atmosphere at a great
location....well worth the day off school!

Kit Update
On joining the Club you are entitled to one free swimming hat. If you are a new joiner and have not done so yet, please
email [email protected] to arrange a hat to be posted direct to you. You should wear this hat to ALL training sessions
and competitions so that it makes it easier for your coach to identify you. Please note that if you move squads you will need to
purchase the correct coloured hat yourself. Again if you lose or damage your hat you will need to replace it yourself.
!
Our swimming hats and bags are available to buy from Mailsports. Mailsports also offer a 10% discount on full priced items
from their catalogue for our members. Please email [email protected] for the code. To access their website please
follow this link: http://www.mailsports.co.uk/chelsea-and-westminster-swimming-club/. To save confusion, there are some of
our old classic style hoodies and t-shirts still available on their website. Our new kit - hoodies, t-shirts, track suits etc. can be
purchased from Kudos. Please follow this link: http://eclubshop.co.uk and select Chelsea and Westminster from the swimming
tab. (Pictured right Coach Rosie wearing the new coaches’ shirt)
!
Swimming kit (apart from the hats) is not compulsory however if your swimmer is going to regularly compete, it is a good idea
that they at least wear the t-shirt and hoodie. It will help them feel part of the team and again it makes it easier for our coaches
to identify their swimmers on busy poolsides. If you have any questions please email [email protected]. !

Volunteer Spotlight
!
We would like to thank Laura Caton-Jones (Romy’s mum), Juliet Rowson (Alex’s mum), Kendall Massey (Allegra & Isabel’s mum) and
Solmaz Hirschmann (Lea’s mum) for stepping forward to take on the following vital roles in the Club:
!•
•
•
Competitions Secretary – Laura will be working with the Committee and Coaches to help send out registrations for galas, both internal and
external. Laura will also be organising the CWSC swim camps that we hold in the school holidays.
Team Travel Manager – Juliet will work with the Competitions Secretary (Laura) and the Coaches to make the appropriate travel arrangements
throughout the competition season. She will be looking for volunteers to qualify as Team Managers so they can accompany the team on away competitions.
If you are planning to accompany your child to away competitions and would be interested in becoming a Team Manager or need to contact her please
email [email protected].
Volunteer Coordinators – Kendall & Solmaz – CWSC only works because of parent volunteers. Kendall and Solmaz will help you find the
role at the club that suits your talents and time. As the Club is often required to provide volunteers and officials at competitions in order for our swimmers
to compete. Kendall and Somaz will be requesting and coordinating officials and volunteers to fill the various roles required. It is often better to be busy
helping on the registration table or on poolside than sitting in the hot and uncomfortable spectator seats! !
!
There are many other roles where we specifically need help including: !
• Clarion Call Administrator
• Membership Co-Coordinator
• IT (to help our current webmaster)
If you might be interested and/or would like more information, please get in touch at [email protected].
CWSC Social Scene
The annual CWSC BBQ was held on Sunday 7th September at Battersea Park Millenium Arena. A very big thank you to the Club’s
social volunteer, Helene Tagliaferri, who put so much effort into making the day such a success and Jo Greengross who organised
the activities on the day. Thanks to coaches Julia, Geoff and Chris who helped organise the games and of course the many
parents who all helped behind the scenes. Isabella Hughes (pictured with Fenella Challinor) has written a report for us about the day and there are photos of some of the kids, coaches and parents who came.
!
Details will be sent of up and coming social events. Volunteers to help organise events are always welcome! In the meantime, if you
need more information or would like to volunteer to help at our social events please contact Helene at [email protected].
Chelsea and Westminster Annual Summer BBQ
The brilliant annual CWSC BBQ was held at Battersea Park in the Millennium Arena. A great venue and as usual the organisers
did a fabulous job, even making sure that we had perfect weather! The event is always very popular with all my friends at the Club,
and this year was no exception.
!
When we arrived we were put into teams for the games and races which were planned after lunch. In my case this was a delicious
and absolutely huge sandwich from the Liberty Cheesesteak Company stall, which was organised by our chairman Mr Boeckman. Now it was
time to prove that my team, the Red Team were the best at the various events including the high jump and long jump, relays and the very funny three legged
race. Brilliant fun events even though sadly our team did not win.
!
!
A big thank you to Helene Tagliaferri and everyone else for organising the event and to all the coaches who came on the day to arrange the activities which
made it so much fun for us all. I am already looking forward to next year!

The next newsletter will be December 2014. Please send in any item you would like included. News from all our squads is most welcome.
