PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
“Jimmy went downstairs and through
the café. He was dressed in tasteful
and well-fitting clothes, and carried
his suitcase in his hand” (lines 57-59).
This piece of evidence shows that
Jimmy Valentine does not even try
to disguise himself as he roams the
town with his burglary tools in his
hand. He looks and dresses
average so he can fit in instead of
standing out.
Low key
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
“Pulling out from the wall a folding
bed, Jimmy slid back a panel in the
wall and dragged out a dustcovered suitcase with the finest set of
burglar’s tools in the east” (lines 4951).
Even after serving time, Jimmy still
kept his burglary tools hidden
away from the police who
undoubtedly searched his place
after arresting him.
Sneaky
CRIMINAL ACTIVITY
Jimmy acted surprised and shocked
when the warden released him from
prison. Jimmy asked, “Me?” Why I’ve
never cracked a safe in my life” (line
12).
Readers can infer that Jimmy is a
wisecracker because his statement
is not true because he was
incarcerated for that very reason.
