  After the War of 1812, there were still unresolved issues between the US, Great Britain, and Spain What do you think some of the unresolved issues were? Make a list. (try to list 4-5)  Share your list with your partner (RallyRobin)

Propose a Treaty

   In your pairs, Imagine each of you are a representative from a foreign nation. Come up with a treaty that might resolve one of the major foreign policy issues between the 2-3 of you. Make sure your treaty has a name, and clearly addresses/solves your issue at hand.

Treaties/Agreements following War of 1812

Rush-Bagot Agreement

 1817, Limited the naval power on the Great Lakes for both the United States and Great Britain 

Convention of 1818

  Set the border between the US and Canada at 49º N latitude as far west as Rocky Mtns.

Adams-Onis Treaty

  Treaty b/w Spain and US which settled border disputes, in which Spain received east FL and the US gave up its claim to what is now Texas. Page 299 of textbook

Monroe Doctrine

James Monroe elected the President in 1816  In 1820s, most of the Spanish colonies in the Americas had declared independence. Many struggles led by the revolutionary Simon Bolivar  After Mexico gained independence in 1821, Monroe grew worried about possibility of Euro. powers taking control of Latin American countries  Monroe and Sec. of State John Q. Adams supported Latin Americans’ independence, however did not want to fight on their behalves.

Monroe Doctrine

 Secretary of State Adams and Monroe decided to put together a document protecting American Interest.  The Monroe Doctrine was an exclusive statement of American policy warning European nations not to interfere with the Americas.  Issued December 2, 1823

 Canals    Rivers mainly traveled from N to S, people needed a quick way to travel from E to W Also, settlers wanted to move from New York area to the Great Lakes area Canals are man-made waterways that connect 2 bodies of water, can transport goods and people  Settlers could move farther from the rivers this way
