Ch. 11 section 3
• American System1. protective tariffs- made European goods
more expensive, encouraged Americans to
buy American-made goods
2. National Bank- this bank would promote a
single currency(money)
3. Improve transportation- need to improve
roads to move goods from town to town
Sectionalism – loyalty to the interest of a region
or section of the country (East/West Coast)
South– slavery
North- manufacturing and trade
West- cheap land
– feeling of pride, loyalty, and protectiveness to
the nation
Transportation
• The national road stretched from the east
coast to Illinois. This road was their version of
I-90. The main route east and west
• Erie canal- connected Buffalo to NY. Now
goods from the Great Lakes region didn’t have
to travel down the Mississippi. Goods get to
NY faster
• Improvement in trains led to less use of the
canals
Era of Good Feeling• nationalist feeling spreads over the country
• Rulings by the Supreme Court strengthened
the Federal Government
• Little to no political differences during this
time (Democratic-Republican)
Missouri Compromise
Brought about when Missouri wanted to enter
as a slave state. This upset the balance in the
Senate. Henry Clay come up with compromise
that Mo would enter as slave and Maine
would enter as a Free State. Also set 36` 30` as
the line that north of slavery would not be
allowed.
Fixing the borders
US and England through treaties reduce military tensions
and set the border with Canada.
US and Spain were not on such good terms. Argued over
boundaries for the LP.
• US tired of slaves escaping to FL
• Tired of NA attacks based in FL
• Jackson goes after the NA’s
• Jackson invades FL to get the NA’s
• US tells Spain either police Fl or give it to us
• Spain signs Adams-Onis Treaty in which they give up
claims in the Oregon Country and also give the US Fl
Monroe Doctrine
This document told European countries that
America and Latin America were closed to
colonization. Said you stay out of our business
and we will stay out of your business
