Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act of 1972 and 1988

• • • • The Act was first passed in 1947.

The current iteration of FIFRA was revised and drafted in 1972, the major change was that it was changed from under the authority of the USDA to the EPA. FIFRA was amended in 1988 to change pesticide registration laws and require re-registration of previously registered pesticides before 1984.

The legislature is national in scope, and federal, civil and criminal penalties may be charged for violations.

• • • • The purpose of FIFRA is to set up the basic U.S. system of pesticide regulation to protect applicators, consumers, and the environment.

Pesticides and the like are submitted to 120 rigorous tests before they are allowed onto the market.

Only 1/139,000 pesticides make it through The Act protects the environment from pollution from harmful or long lasting chemicals and people from toxic substances.

• • FIFRA is currently managed by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and its respective environmental agencies in the states.

It was previously maintained by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture).
