Businesses maintain groups of servers on-site to fulfill various business needs including: • Network Servers / Domain Controllers • File Storage • Application Servers (CRM, ERP, Databases, Billing) • Web Servers (Hosting of web sites and applications) These servers consume the same resources that any on-site IT resource consumes: • Space, Power, Cooling, Administrative time, Maintenance Fees, Capex What’s missing from the data room? These on-site servers generally need, but do not always get: • Fire Suppression • Backup Power • Failover / Redundant equipment • Monitoring • 24x7 support Traditional Server Environments • Today’s server hardware is designed to run a single operating system. • Today’s operating systems (Windows, Linux) are generally designed to have complete control over the hardware on which they run. • Most server applications are designed to run discretely on an individual server • This leaves most machines vastly underutilized as they are generally utilized for a specific application or purpose like: • A File Server • A Web Server • A Mail Server Traditional Server Environments One Server for One Application ►File Server ►Web Server ►Mail Server The problem with “One Server = One Application” Environments ► Underutilized computing resources ► Single Point of Failure ► Power and Environmentals ► Management Nightmare Server Virtualization Pictorial Typical Model: One Server, One Application Virtual Machine: ONE server, Multiple Applications Virtual Infrastructure: Multiple Servers, Multiple and REDUNDANT Applications Traditional Desktop Environments • Each employee uses a desktop or laptop that IT must maintain. • Ability to run software is based on the equipment on which it is installed. • Local disk stores OS, applications and data. • Upgrades and software are deployed on a one to one basis. The problem with Desktop Environments ► Mobility equals risk ► Resource requirements increase with time ► Single Point of Failure ► Expensive ► Management Nightmare Desktop Virtualization Pictorial Typical Desktop: One Desktop, One OS, One Employee Virtual Desktop: Access to a single desktop, from any device Top Reasons to Consider Desktop Virtualization • Economics – Reduce the total cost of desktop ownership by almost 70% through remote troubleshooting, ease of deployment, and extended life of older equipment. • Productivity – Users can gain access to their desktop from any location on any device, while administrators can support and deploy from a centralized location. • Scalability – Meet new requirements by adding additional resources to the “virtual” PC rather than upgrading equipment • Performance – Immediately rectify PC problems by remotely restarting, or reimaging the desktop saving IT time and putting employees back to work immediately. • Security – Provide external users with secure access to company apps and data. Enforce end-to-end security, consistently, across all users, regardless of device. What is Cloud Computing? • Cloud computing is a style of computing in which scalable and often virtualized resources are provided as-a-service over the Internet. • Users need not have knowledge of, expertise in, or control over the technology infrastructure in the "cloud" that supports them. • The concept generally incorporates any service that is being provided remotely by a service provider • The term cloud is used as a metaphor for the Internet, based on how the Internet is depicted in computer network diagrams. • In general terms, Cloud Computing is Virtualizing to a service provider’s data center High-Level Benefits of Cloud Computing • • • • • • • • • Lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Reduced hardware footprint Improved performance and reliability Built-in Disaster Recovery / Business Continuity Lower hardware and software maintenance Instant software updates, accessibility Pay only for what is used Agile; make changes on demand Its easy being GREEN; energy efficient Cloud Computing Technology Overview Types of Clouds Private Cloud Premise or Hosted Models Dedicated equipment for single customer Scaling and Cost challenges Secure & Isolated High-availability difficult to achieve Public Cloud Community-based offering Over-subscribed Compute New Age Web-scale applications High-availability options Cheap disk; performance challenged Virtual Private Cloud Best of both worlds Stable, Isolated, and Secure Control to scale and expand on-demand Enterprise-grade storage options High-availability options Evolve IP – Virtual Private Cloud Difference Virtual Private Cloud Vendors Infrastructure Focus Important to understand • • • • • Legacy applications Production environments such as SAP, Oracle, SQL, etc. Evolutionary approach to Cloud over revolutionary Low risk; incremental savings • Only good for easily ported web apps or newly developed apps “Revolutionary” approach to cloud Good for new opportunity; higher risk for legacy • Evolve IP Savvis Terremark • • Web-Scale Cloud Computing • • • Amazon Web Services GoGrid Softlayer • • • • • • • • Higher-grade; higher cost solution Can run legacy applications with little or NO adaptation Enterprise data center at “Service provider scale” Technology choices are different Requires intelligence in the application; “Evolutionary” Higher risk Can run legacy apps only with rearchitecting The Evolved Difference Enterprise-grade or better infrastructure Treat network, servers, storage, and bandwidth as modular IT resources Deliver predictable performance over bursty compute Scalability of public cloud united with the security of private cloud Production-workloads approved Infuse all elements with cloudlike visibility, control, and automation Evolve IP Cloud Computing Product Suite Evolved Colocation Evolve IP Colocation Services enable customers to leverage resources at Evolve IP’s World Class Network and Security Operations Centers to host physical servers in a redundant and secure environment.
