What is a Goal?

Purpose of Goal-Setting

• • • • • • • • • Goals guide and direct behavior. Goals provide clarity. Goals provide challenges and standards. Goals reflect what the goal setters consider important. Goals help improve performance. Goals increase the motivation to achieve. Goals help increase pride and satisfaction in achievements. Goals improve self-confidence. Goal Length

• • • Short-term goals: goals that you will achieve in the near future ( in a day, within a week, or possibly within a few months) Long-term goals: goals that you will achieve over a longer period of time (one semester, one year, five years, or twenty years) Lifetime Goals: goals that you will work on achieving throughout your entire life to set expectations for a healthy life

• S-Specific Goal-Setting Model The SMART guidelines • S: A goal of graduating from high school is too general. Specify how this will be accomplished. (Study more in order to receive better grades.) • M-Measurable • M: Establish criteria for how a goal is to be achieved. Measurable does not refer to a timeline; it means determining a way to measure the success in completing the long-range goal. • A-Action-oriented • A: Be proactive in taking action that will result in reaching the desired goal. • R-Realistic • R: Strive for attainable goals, considering the resources and constraints relative to the situation. • T-Timely • T: Allow reasonable time to complete each goal, but not so much time the mentee loses focus or motivation.

Goal Setting Assignment

• Due next Monday- please use a separate sheet of paper • Choose 3 goals that you would like to achieve and prioritize them in the order that you would like to complete them.

• Explain how each of these goals will be reached using all five guidelines of the SMART model
