Linde’s Engineering
Hydrogen and Synthesis Gas Plant
Gas processing plant
Synthesis gas:
 Mixture of gas containing primarily hydrogen, carbon
monoxide and some carbon dioxide
 Use in production of ammonia, methanol and synthetic
natural gas
 Hydrogen gas
 Used in production of ammonia, methanol etc
Hydrogen plant in China built by Linde’s Engineering
Basic process
1. Hydrodesulfurization of feed stock
2. Steam reforming
3. Heat recovery from reformed and from combustion
flue gas to produce process and export steam
4. Single stage adiabatic high temperature
5. CO-shift conversion
6. Final hydrogen purification by pressure swing
adsorption
Steam reforming

Produce hydrogen from fuel gas and steam
CH4+H20CO +3H2

Water system
 Using DEMINERALISED WATER.
 Produces high quality water free from any kind of
minerals.
 Uses specially-manufactured ion exchange resins
which provides ion exchange site for the replacement
of the mineral salts in water with water forming H+
and OH- ions.
 Feed water is passed through two small polystyrene beds filled with ion
exchange resins.
 The cations present in water get exchanged with hydrogen ions in first
bed.
 And the anions are exchanged with hydroxyl ions, in the second bed.
 These units remove Cationic ions from the water
 Then the water enters through the Strong Base Anions and Anions get
removed from the water stream
 Mixed Bed units polishes the water, greatly reducing the conductivity
level
 Finally the demineralized water is then passed to the storage tank
Fuel gas system
 Consisting primarily of hydrogen, carbon monoxide,
and some carbon dioxide.
 To produce hydrogen using steam reforming method
of natural gas or liquid hydrocarbons.
 A device (reformer): reacts steams to high
temperature produced by fossil fuel.
Steam system
Produced in steam generator, or boiler
1. Fire Tube Boiler
2. Water Tube Boiler
3. Packaged Boiler
4. Fluidized Bed (FBC) Boiler
5. Stoker Fired Boiler
6. Pulverized Fuel Boiler
7. Waste Heat Boiler
Steam generator:




Device used to boil a water to create steam.
heaters made with coils made of seamless tubes
feed water is preheated and evaporated during the flow
The heat is transferred to the water/steam mixture as radiant
heat in the combustion chamber,
 inner cylindrical tube coil and a flat tube coil forms the
chamber wall and the bottom respectively.
Compressor
 Converts low pressure steam to high pressure steam
1. Dynamic

Conclusion
 In conclusion plant utility is the heart of the plant
serving all kinds of life blood to the complex system.
Without them, most of the equipment cannot
operate.
 Basically all of the systems serve almost the same
purposes depending on the type of operation.
 Therefore, as chemical students, utilities in plant are
one of the most important basics and fundamental in
plant study that should be concerned about.
