The Dependency of Production examines the inherent dependency between factory
and product and the new dependency between factory and community. The
building is a factory, located in Indianapolis, Indiana, that manufactures steel frame
modules for use in a variety of programs including retail, residential, and office. The
factory responds to four themes; dependency, transportation, production, and
transparency. The factory seeks to educate users about manufacturing processes,
lean manufacturing, and steel frame modular as a building system. This building
reflects on the current state of factory design and serves as a model for what the next
generation of factory design could be.

the north end of the site. The railroad becomes important for delivery of materials and shipping of finished
product.

elements such as a welding school, observation decks, and green space invite the public into the site to
learn about manufacturing processes.
The interior functions of the factory begin to spill out into the public green space and the mechanized
nature of the green space reflects the ideals of the factory.
