The Riddle: The following verse spells out a word, letter by
letter. "My first" refers to the word's first letter, and so on. What's
the word that this verse describes?
My first is in fish but not in snail
My second in rabbit but not in tail
My third in up but not down
My fourth in tiara not in crown
My fifth in tree you plainly see
My whole a food for you and me
The Answer: FRUIT

Get in your Literature Circle
1.
Distribute copies of the difficult passages to your group members.

Select the group member that will lead each difficult passage.

You’re homework will be to break down the passage by asking
questions that lead to understanding.

Literature Circles

You will meet for 15 minutes today.

First five minutes – Discuss the basic plot. What does the text say?

Second five minutes – Discuss how the text works. What is unique
about the writer’s style? Describe the tone, mood, symbolism,
sentence length, etc.

Third five minutes – Discuss what is going on beneath the surface? Is
there more to this text than just simple plot? What is the author’s
purpose for writing the way he/she does? What themes does the
author seem to be trying to get across?
Antithesis

A contrast of language used to bring out a contrast in ideas.

Read page 22 – 23. Then put the following in your notes:

WHY is antithesis an attractive and effective tool for writers?

What are three ways you can develop antithesis in your writing?

What other effects can antithesis be used for? (between 3-4 ideas)

Write down a couple of examples that will help you identify examples of
antithesis.

Conciseness vs. Elaboration

Why do teachers tell you to be concise while others ask you to
elaborate?

Listen to an example paragraph.

Try to edit wordy passages (homework)

Try to combine sentences with elaboration (homework)
Argumentative Essay

Recent items in the news that may have been of use to you?

Making sure you understand the prompt and respond directly to it.

Be sure you have a clear thesis.

Provide specific examples to support your thesis.
Canterbury Tales

Finish discussing “How the text works” questions.

Move on to “What the text means?” questions.

Then see if you can generate some ideas as to what the author may
be asking you to do? “What does the text inspire you to do?”

Homework: Write a close paraphrase of the entire passage.
Remember with paraphrase, you should not lose meaning or detail.

The Prioress

Read Canterbury Tale’s prologue introduction of the Prioress.

Go through the four step process of creating questions and
discussing. Write (annotate) the essay to help you figure out what is
taking place here.



