COMMON CORE Standards for Mathematical Practice Michelle White, Executive Director Department of Mathematics and Science Office of Academics and Transformation Annie Klian, District Instructional Supervisor Helen Brown, District Curriculum Support Specialist Shelley Werner, District Curriculum Support Specialist STANDARDS FOR MATHEMATICAL PRACTICE Overarching Habits of Mind Productive Math Thinker (1) Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them Reasoning and Explaining (2) Reason abstractly and quantitatively 2 (3) Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others (6) Attend to precision Modeling and Using Tools (4) Model with mathematics (5) Use appropriate tools strategically Seeing Structure and Generalizing (7) Look for and make use of structure (8) Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning 2 GROUP ACTIVITY Each group will receive: • An envelope containing 8 small cards and a handout of the listed mathematical practices: • A large handout for each of the 8 practices. Instructions: • Match each of the 8 small cards with its mathematical practice (using the handout of the listed mathematical practices). • Hold up the large card for the practice when asked as we review each one. 3 3 GROUP ACTIVITY Each group will receive: • An envelope containing 8 small cards and a handout of the listed mathematical practices: • A one page handout of what the practice looks like in the classroom. Instructions: • Match each of the 8 small cards with its mathematical practice (using the handout of the listed mathematical practices. • Each group will place their one large card under the matching practice on the chart paper. 4 4 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them 1 5 5 Reason abstractly and quantitatively 2 7 7 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others 3 9 9 Model with mathematics 4 11 11 Use appropriate tools strategically 5 13 13 Attend to precision 6 15 15 Look for and make use of structure 7 17 17 Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning 8 19 19
