draft Planning Strategy supported by 13 background papers that summarise the issues and challenges

City structure, form and land use Housing Transport and mobility Climate change Health and wellbeing Social inclusion Biodiversity Food Regional perspective Employment - growth, change and location Infrastructure Population growth and demographic change Resource consumption

9 strategies set a revised direction to build on Canberra’s • planning legacy and the strength of its metropolitan structure • its image, role and the business of being the ‘bush capital’ • position and location in a diverse region

9 strategies intended to create: • diversity in the urban environment and greater choice in affordable, sustainable living • better urban amenity and social equity • resilience to change – social, economic and the potential impacts of climate change

focus on integrating land use and transport policies • by distinguishing the direct public transport routes from the ‘commuter parkways’ • more people with more direct access to public transport • more opportunities to live close to work and services, more choice to take up ‘active travel’ options

each strategy has one identifiable target and measure for easier more transparent reporting on achievement

7 Principles established to guide decisions in the implementation of the plan. These principles reflect the intent of the strategy and can be applied at every scale, from structure planning through to master plans.

Commitment to ongoing conversations on the future development and implementation of the strategy through the master planning program
