What is Distracted Driving?

Distracted driving is any activity that could divert a person's attention away from the primary task of driving. May include:  Texting, using a cell phone or smartphone.

 Eating, drinking, or grooming.

 Reading (including maps), using a navigation system.

 Watching videos, adjusting a radio, CD player, or MP3 player.

Look Who’s Talking

Nearly 70 percent of Americans ages 18 to 64 admitted to talking on their phones while driving About 30 percent of this group admitted to texting while driving.

 Talking on a cell phone while driving equals driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.08 percent  Drivers talking on cell phones were 18% slower at braking than other motorists  Texting drivers were six times more likely to crash

Kids Today!

 Teen drivers are most likely age group to be involved in a fatal crash involving distraction.  In 2009, 16% of teens involved in a fatal crash reported being distracted. (NHTSA)  40% of teens claim to have been in a car when the driver used a cell phone in a dangerous way.  The purpose of the “Take 5 to Stay Alive” campaign is to improve roadway safety by preventing crashes related to texting while driving.

 The message is simple and can save lives.  Take a break from driving and pull off the road to use your cell phone.
