To make as much money as possible, England passed a series of laws called the Navigation Acts .

1. Laws designed to make sure Britain profited as much as possible from trade.

2. Colonists had to use British ships to transport goods.

WHAT THEY WERE EXAMPLE NAVIGATION ACTS 3. Some products, such as sugar and tobacco, could not be sold to other countries.

EXAMPLE EFFECT 4. Some colonists disobeyed the law by smuggling goods .

Colonial Life

Colonial life was hard for everyone.

Mothers worked at home and had no modern conveniences. They churned butter, spun yarn, baked bread, and washed clothes by hand.

Girls stayed home and helped their mothers.

Apprentices

Many boys became indentured servants or apprentices.

An apprentice worked for free for someone until he turned 18.

This was how Ben Franklin learned his job.
