The Technology-Aided Instructional Design

Technology-Assisted Instruction

The technology-assisted instruction can help effectively deliver information, help instructional organization, and provide comprehensible input to the students with the aid of images, graphics, sound and animation. The design of the technology assisted instruction is important .

The Challenge to a Plan

A careful planning of the instructional design could assure the effective use of the instructional media and technology. Learning could be enhanced through each step of the classroom activities via the appropriate lesson planning.

ASSURE Model:

The Six Points

A nalyze the learners S tate objectives S elect methods, media, and materials U tilize the media and materials R equire learner participation E valuate and revise

Analyze the Learners

For the instructional media and technology-assisted class, there must be a match between characteristics of the learners and the content of the methods, media, and materials. The critical factors we need to think about in instructional design:

1. General characteristics of the learners 2. Learners’ entry competencies 3. Learning styles 4. Learners’ preference

State Objectives

The next step in the ASSURE model is to state the objectives of the instruction: what learning outcome is each learner expected to achieve, and what abilities the learners are supposed to develop. How technology could help us when we realize these objectives. The objective determines the design of your class instruction and the media use in your class.

Select Methods, Media, and Materials

A systematic planning for using media and technology includes: 1. Deciding on the appropriate methods for the given learning tasks 2. Choosing a media format that is suitable for carrying out the method (conducive to information inputting, identifying, processing and retention.

3. Selecting, modifying, or designing specific materials and resources with that media format

Utilize Media and Materials

Prepare the materials/resources Preview the materials/resources Prepare the environment Prepare the learners to use technology Provide the learning experience through tech (prior knowledge and new knowledge)

Evaluate and Revise Your Lessons

The evaluation and revision are the most importance component of the quality education. Evaluation is made before, during, and after the instruction to check with the learner and your instructional feedback. Revision and update always go along with your process. Creative design and inventive integration of technology are the mottos to your desktop.

       Logo-based learning (Seymour Papert, 1980) Video Disk-Based Anchored instruction Bransford, University of Vanderbilt, 1993) (John Digital portfolio, multimedia database/record Learning resources online, anytime and anywhere Distance education (network, television, online) Wireless laptop, portable learning tool Virtual Reality and 3D environment

Commonly Used Theories Behaviorism:

knowledge of correct response serves as a reinforcer of appropriate behaviors (Skinner)

Cognitivism

: information about results helps to enrich learners’ mental schemata (Piaget) (Cognitive development)

Social Learning

: interpersonal feedback provides both corrective information and emotional support (Vygotsky)

Discovery Learning:

learning by exploring and discovering new things as a learning process. (Bruner)

Constructivism

: students’ active involvement contributes to the understanding and creation of knowledge.

Social Learning Effect

In 1920 in India, one girl, about 8 years old, was found among wolves. The people killed the wolves and saved the girl. They brought the girl home and named her Kamena. She looked like animals with long sharp teeth, and long lower jaw. She made the wolf sound to communicate. She lived until 1929. After a hard time of learning, she finally could stand on her feet, eat human’s food and able to speak 50 words.

Conclusion

    Integration of technology is also the experience based process Diligent work and continuous update to your professionalism are important factors to make you an effective teacher A flexible mind and a multicultural perspective could help you meet higher expectation in a global view Never stop learning and be open to new things that are emerging everyday
