Bullying News
What is Bullying?
Bullying is a widespread and serious problem that can
happen anywhere. It is not a phase children have to go
through, it is not “Just messing around”, and it is not
something to grow out of. Bullying can cause serious and
lasting harm. Bullying takes many forms including:
–
–
–
–
–
–
Physical violence and attacks
Verbal taunts, name-calling and put downs
Threats and intimidation
Extortion or stealing or money and possessions
Exclusion from the peer group
Cyber bullying occurs when people use the Internet, mobile
phones or other digital technologies to harm others
Types of Bullies
The Name Caller
Name Callers bully others by saying things that are rude,
hurtful or embarrassing. They may insult people because
of their race, looks, abilities, or religious beliefs. Some
Name Callers use words to threaten or scare people.
Types of Bullies
The Brute
Brutes may threaten, hit, kick, trip or push others. Some
brutes demand that people give them money and threaten
violence if someone says no. Brutes may also take, hide or
destroy other person’s belongs.
Types of Bullies
The “Friend”
The “Friend” can act nice one minute and mean the next.
He/She may tease people, say bad things about them or
boss them around. These bullies often make people feel
like they deserve to be mistreated, calling them “touchy” if
they complain about the bullying. They may also gossip or
spread rumors, make up stories to get people into trouble,
or pressure people into doing things they do not want to
do.
Types of Bullies
The Crowd
The Crowd is a group of bullies, like a street gang or a
social clique. A clique is a group of friends who share the
same interest. The Crowd might tell people to ignore
someone, spread false stories about a person to make him
look bad, or to ask someone to do something wrong.
Types of Bullies
The Jokester
Jokester bullies love to get attention and make others
laugh by insulting or teasing people about things like their
size, race, religion, looks or grades. Some will even make
fun of people who have a medical problem or physical
disability. Jokesters usually excuse their bullying by saying
it was “only a joke.”
Types of Bullies
The Cyberbully
Cyberbullying is similar to other types of bullying, except it
takes place online and through text messages sent to cell
phones. Cyberbullies can be classmates, online
acquaintances, and even anonymous users, but most often
they do know their victims.

Types of Bullies
The Cyberbully
Some examples of ways kids bully online are:
Sending someone mean or threatening emails,
instant messages, or text messages
Excluding someone from an instant messenger
buddy list or blocking their email for no reason
Tricking someone into revealing personal or
embarrassing information and sending it to others
Breaking into someone's email or instant message
account to send cruel or untrue messages while
posing as that person
Creating websites to make fun of another person
such as a classmate or teacher
Using website to rate peers as prettiest, ugliest, etc.

Types of Bullies
The Cyberbully
Both boys and girls sometimes bully online and just as in
face-to-face bullying, tend to do so in different ways. Boys
more commonly bully by sending messages of a sexual
nature or by threatening to fight or hurt someone. Girls
more often bully by spreading rumors and by sending
messages that make fun of someone or exclude
others. They also tell secrets.

Bully Fact:
Each day 160,000 students miss school for fear
of being bullied!
Bullying can lead teenagers to feel tense,
anxious, and afraid. It can affect their
concentration in school, and can lead them to
avoid school in some cases.
MYTH:
–If I tell someone it will just make it worse
FACT:
–Research shows that bullying will stop when adults
in authority and peers get involved
MYTH:
–Just stand up for yourself and hit them back
FACT:
–Hitting back usually makes the bullying worse and
increases the risk for serious physical harm
MYTH:
–People are born bullies
FACT:
–Bullying is a learned behavior and behaviors can be
changed.
If bullying continues for some time, it can begin to affect
teens’ self-esteem and feeling of self-worth. It also can
increase their social isolation, leading them to become
withdrawn and depressed, anxious, and insecure.
