Women Roles.











Puritan woman were saddles down with many responsibilities
Most New England woman spent most of their time either nursing or
being pregnant.
Woman were to teach their children about the bible and make sure they
read a certain amount a time a day.
Women were excluded from town meetings they could not go at all, they
could also not make decision in the town church.
One of the most important female roles was spinning, women would
spend a lot of time doing this spinning wool or flax into thread.
Women were always said to be inferior to men in that time period
Religion was a huge comfort for puritan woman
The goal for woman was to be as perfect as possible to please god and be
saved from hell.
Puritan woman were not allowed to speak their minds at home.
Hard working woman were usually married by the time they were in
their early twenties
Women had up to 8 or 9 children perhaps 10 or more.

Women were not allowed to speak their minds at home or anywhere
else unless alone or with other female companion.
If a woman lived on a farm on the outskirts of town or village that
served as the center of the Puritan lifestyle she was compelled to raise
and slaughter all of the livestock and then cure it for consumption.
Women never tended to leave their house unless it was to go to church
& to buy what they needed in their household.
The woman worked as hard as the men of the family but they were
weren’t as appreciated as men were.
Keeping and maintaining a clean house was a thing puritan woman
had to maintain at all times
The woman of the family would get up very early and start the meals
of the day this generally took all day they also had to do many other
things around the house, take care of their children, and make sure
their husband was happy.

Puritan men were usually farmers because their families depended on
it.

Men were the head of the family gave orders while members of the
family followed orders.

Puritans viewed the male head of the house hold as the biblically
responsible for commanding and instructing the family in the way of
the lord.

Puritan fathers didn’t take active role in the children’s until a child
reached the age of 2 or 3.

They had no importance to a families life unless it was a boy then they
taught him everything they knew about hunting trading ext.

Colonial men had to hunt for wild birds and animals.

Most men were farmers but some trained to do other things

Anne Hutchinson was a woman who was very unusual due to the fact
she was educated by her father he taught her how to read and write
she had also learned high nursing skills. She had 12 children who
survived. She spoke out to woman about freedom and such things
people took this as a threat. She got married at the age of 30 years to
William Hutchinson. She was taken to court for something she did not
commit yet she was sentenced.

Thomas Fuller was an English church man and historian. He was
married in about 1640 with a woman named Eleanor he had two kids
with her a boy and a girl. He was a historian who wrote a lot of what
happened back in the English colonial times.

Most american men of fighting age had to face the call to arms.
Many men left their wife's behind yet some did not some brought their wives & their
children too.
When men were at war women and men would write love letters to each other even
though they were so far away.
The women's job's when they did go with their husbands was to cook and mend torn
uniforms.
Some women even fought along the side of their loved one.
Some women worked as nurses helping the wounded and dying.
At times women were even spies to the patriots.
Women even turned their homes into places where men could go if wounded.
If wife's stayed home they had to takeover as weavers, carpenters, blacksmiths, or
shipbuilders.
Every war means more women taking charge during the absence and after death of
husbands or fathers.
Many women found themselves in the position of having to defend their homes and
families from attacks by British and Native American troops
