The W. M. Keck Observatory
• Twin telescopes function as an
interferometer
– Data archived at NExScI!
• Each telescope has its own suite
of powerful imagers and
spectrographs
• In 2002, NASA funded an
archive of data from the High
Resolution Echelle Spectrograph
(HIRES)
– Celebrated for its role in the
discovery of exoplanets
• . . . thus was born KOA

Extracted HIRES Spectra
• KOA developed an automated pipeline for the
extraction of 1-D browse spectra from the raw
science and calibration files
– Upgrade to existing package (makee v5.2.x)
• Wavelength calibration extended to 9800 Å
• Improvements to cosmic-ray masking, tracefinding and slit-finding routines.
• Product contains:
– 1-D spectrum per order per CCD
• Automated extraction grade
• Manual validation of grade
– Diagnostic data including:

KOA Under The Hood

Data Evaluation and Preparation (DEP) and Data Quality Analysis (DQA)
•
•

Trans-Pacific Transfer (TPX)
•

Validates the integrity of the headers and content of the FITS files created at the telescope
Adds archive-supporting content to the FITS headers (e.g., program information, image type)
Automated transfer of metadata and data from WMKO to MSC. Ingestion complete the afternoon
following the observations.
Data Storage and User Interface (UI)
•
•
•
•
Re-uses IRSA’s component-based service layer architecture
Provides secure access for PIs to proprietary data
Supports searches for science and/or calibration files based on scientific, instrumental, and
program information
File packaging and download support
