October 2014 – January 2015
One Mission, Two Funds:
Proclaiming Christ in Word and Deed
Presbyterians Sharing supports the overall
mission and ministry of The Presbyterian
Church in Canada. Congregations commit to
raising an accepted allocation each year. The
goal for congregations in 2014 is $7.5 million.
Presbyterian World Service & Development
is the PCC’s development and relief agency.
PWS&D raises funds directly from
congregations and individuals and through
government grants – over and above gifts to
Presbyterians Sharing.
October 5: Transcribing church history in Taiwan
Presbyterians Sharing provides support for Louise Gamble as she works
with our partner church, The Presbyterian Church in Taiwan, to transcribe
and translate reports and correspondence of the Canadian Presbyterian
North Formosa (Taiwan) Mission.
October 16: World Food Day
World Food Day is a day to raise public awareness of world food
production and the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and
poverty. PWS&D works to end global hunger by providing food in
times of emergency and helping small-scale farmers increase crop
yields.
October 19: Equipping church leaders
Presbyterians Sharing supports Knox College (Toronto),
Presbyterian College (Montreal) and St. Andrew’s Hall/Vancouver
School of Theology (Vancouver). These Presbyterian colleges
equip and nurture future church leaders who will in turn equip and
nurture the people of God to witness faithfully in the world.
October 26: New Beginnings for Refugees
PWS&D’s refugee ministry is a response to Christ’s call to serve and defend
the vulnerable and persecuted. Last year, PWS&D was able to resettle 28
refugees arriving to build new lives in Canada, thanks to your generous gifts.
November 2: Stewards By Design
Presbyterians Sharing helps equip congregations through events like
Stewards By Design, a conference designed to help congregations
discover how stewardship connects to all aspects of the mission and
ministry of the church.
November 9: One year after typhoon Haiyan
After typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines in 2013, PWS&D responded
through the ACT Alliance which provided 115,000 people with food in the
immediate aftermath. PWS&D continues to support rehabilitation and
disaster preparedness work.
November 16: Meeting one another Face to Face!
Gifts to Presbyterians Sharing brought 14 young people from the
PCC’s partner churches in Malawi, Taiwan, Ukraine and Nicaragua to
Canada for three weeks. They visited churches and sites in Eastern
Canada and attended CY2014, where they sang, danced and
worshipped with over 500 young people from across Canada.
November 23: Take the Advent challenge
Each week of Advent, PWS&D challenges individuals and
congregations to share the hope, peace, joy and love of Christ’s birth
with those in need. To learn more about the Advent Challenge visit
WeRespond.ca.
November 30: World AIDS Day (December 1)
Our church continues to support HIV and AIDS programs through
PWS&D, working with partners to prevent transmission between
mother and child, providing counseling and testing and supporting
and caring for orphans and vulnerable children.
December 7: Sharing the gospel in Romania
Presbyterians Sharing supports Brian Johnston, an English and music
teacher serving the Theological Seminary of the Hungarian Reformed
Church in Cluj, Romania. Brian is also an avid photographer,
recording scenes of village life and local scenery.
December 14: Male motivators and maternal health
Through PWS&D’s maternal health program, male motivators are
equipped with the knowledge and skills to help other men understand
the effects of pregnancy and delivery for their partners and take an
active role in the welfare of their families.
December 21: Bringing hope to inner-city Winnipeg
Through Presbyterians Sharing, Winnipeg Inner City Missions helps people
to develop or recover a healthy physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual
self. WICM offers after-school programs, a community store, transitional
housing and a weekly worship service.
December 28: Seeking healing and reconciliation
Gifts to Presbyterians Sharing support seven native ministries in Canada
which reach out to vulnerable people in their communities. They promote
physical, emotional, spiritual and social wellbeing and operate on a
foundation of respect for traditional Aboriginal spirituality and culture.
January 4: Your voice is powerful. Let it be heard!
Take part in the Harvest of Letters campaign and write to your MP
urging the Canadian government to invest in smallholder agriculture in
developing countries. For more information, visit WeRespond.ca.
January 11: Preserving PCC history
Presbyterians Sharing supports the work of Kim Arnold and Bob Anger in
the Presbyterian Church Archives office. Kim and Bob work to collect,
preserve and make available to researchers the significant collections of
records generated by our Church, its officials, ministers, congregations
and organizations.
January 18: Proud to send my daughter to school
Sayed makes bricks to support his family. For a time, his ten- year-old
daughter Saima worked alongside him. Through a PWS&D project in
Afghanistan, Sayed learned that this daughter was too young to be doing
hard labour and that it was his responsibility to send her to school. Sayed
now works hard to raise awareness about how education can change
children’s futures.
January 25: Serving in Ukraine
Presbyterians Sharing supports David and Anna Pandy as they serve
with the Reformed Church of Sub-Carpathian Ukraine. Anna is a
teacher and David coordinates four Christian secondary schools and
helps supervise RCCU missionaries.
Our gifts to Presbyterians
Sharing and Presbyterian
World Service & Development
support mission and ministry
in Canada and around the
world!
