Verb Tenses Past, Present, and Future What is a verb tense?? •The tense of the verb tells when something happens. There are 3 tenses! •Past Tense •Present Tense •Future Tense Past Tense • Shows something that has happened in the past (including yesterday). • Usually ends in –d or –ed. – Ex: watch- watched love-loved • If the verb ends in y, change the y to i and add –ed. – Ex: hurry- hurried carry- carried • If the verb is a one-syllable word that ends in one vowel and one consonant, double the consonant and add –ed. – Ex: scan- scanned plan- planned Present Tense • A verb in the present tense tells something that is happening now (or today). • Add –s or –es to most verbs. – Ex: dance- dances catch- catches • If the verb ends in y, change the y to i and add –es. – Ex: carry- carries bury- buries Future Tense • A verb in the future tense tells that something is going to happen (tomorrow or sometime in the future). • Add “will” or “shall” to show the future tense of a verb. – Ex: explore- will explore help- shall help •PLEASE keep your flip book to help you study for your test!!
