How to write an essay for in exam
Read the question
• Read the question and make sure that you
understand what the question is asking you to
do. Read the entire front page incase there are
hints on how to answer the question.
Read the Rubric
• Read the marking rubric as this is what the
teachers use to mark your work. It can
indicate what needs to be in your work.
Create a Plan
• Write an essay plan by listing in point form the
answer to the question.
• Rank the answers from most important to least
important.
• If you need to write next to this elaboration or
key words then do it.
• If any points are similar or link then make that
connection here.
• Decide which order your points will go in order to
make them flow
Introduction
• Start writing your introduction.
• You should restate the question somewhere
here.
• Any words that need defining should be done
here and/or a sentence giving some
background information.
• Leave room to write your thesis statement
(we will write this last)
Write your paragraphs
• Write your paragraphs according to your plan.
Make sure you stay on task and you are
answering the question rather than
showcasing everything you know about the
topic
10 minutes before time is up
• When there is 10 minutes left finish the paragraph that
you are on. If you have used the plan you made you
should have written enough relevant information.
• Write your thesis statement at the end of your
introduction. This should be a sentence that states the
points that you have spoken about in your essay.
• Begin writing you conclusion. Remember this is
summarising what you have said in you paragraphs and
should mirror you introduction.
• Read over what you have written and correct mistakes.
