History
 In conjunction with leading UK teaching
hospital (see me afterwards for details!) and
EFMI-Information Planning & Modelling in
Healthcare working group.
 Extension of a project funded by UK Treasury
Capital Modernisation fund.
 Our contribution unfunded.
 Focus on telemonitoring of haemo-oncology
patients.

The problem
 Treatment typically involves several cycles of
chemo/radio therapy with intervening periods to allow
the patient’s immune system to recover.
 During these periods, the patient is strongly at risk
from viral, fungal or bacterial infection. Therefore…
 It would be better for the patient to spend this period
in the comfort of their own home. But…
 The need to continually monitor patients and to take
rapid action in the case of septicaemic shock is vital.
 So, how can current ‘tele’ technology help?

Requirements
 Needs to monitor temperature and pulse
rate.
 Reliable, with backup mechanisms.
 Protects privacy of patient.
 Preferably ambulatory.
 Preferably (very) cheap.
 Preferably autonomous, with minimal (no)
extra load on clinicians.
