Economic Challenges Affecting Transfer at the CCC • • • • • Over $800 million in cuts since 2008-09 A reduction of over 60,000 course sections in three years In 2010-11, 140,000 students could only get one class Fewer counseling resources to guide Results: – Students who can’t get their classes can’t transfer on time – Students who can’t transfer on time stay longer and take more units

• Economic Challenges Affecting Transfer at the CSU State support for the CSU has been

cut by almost $1 billion or 35% over the past 18 months.

– Student tuition increases cover over only ½ of cuts.

– State resources are now equal to the 1996-1997 fiscal year; CSU enrolls 90,000 more students.

• The CSU will continue to focus on authentic access for students – Enrollment management approaches and strategies vary by campus – Resources and enrollment capacity highly dependent on outcomes of November election.

• • •

Economic Challenges Affecting Transfer at the UC

UC sustained $750M in cuts for 2011-12 Maintained our goals in the face of these cuts – Access – no reduction in new California enrollment – Affordability – currently no tuition increase – Quality – The University’s top priority Strategies for dealing with budget cuts – Cost reductions/efficiencies – Tuition and fee increases – Non-resident enrollment
