Analogous Vs. Homologous
Changes Simulation
Big Question
• What strategies do populations use to
survive?
Focus Question
• How do homologous and analogous
structures arise and how might they
effect an organisms ability to survive?
Specific Lab Question
• How does evolution lead to homologous
and analogous structures?

Challenge I: Make a Flying Device that can fly in a
relative straight flight pattern in the air for at least 3
seconds or 5 meters, your choice.
•
Make two flying device using the materials available from the two separate tubs. (not
all materials must be used) Take a picture of your devices
•
Test your device. If is successful move onto challenge II, if it is not Roll the die to
determine the type of change that can be made. (refer to the Roll Chart)
•
Make the change to the device or devices that need improvement and test again.
•
Continue rolling the die and making changes until the device can successfully perform
the challenge.
•
Record all trials and changes in the qualitative data section of the lab.
Roll Chart
• 1: Make two changes by folding or twisting a
material or the device
• 2: Make one change using tape
• 3: Make one change by adding a material
using tape or other adhesive
• 4: Make one change by removing a material
• 5: Make one change by tearing or cutting
• 6: Your Choice: Choose a change 1 through 5
to do.
Straight Flyer Data Section:(For both devices) Use the next few slides to
organize Straight Flyer Data. It should include picture of devices, qualitative
flight description, and die roll that created the change

Data Section: (For both devices) Curved Flyer Data Section should include
picture of device, qualitative flight description, and die rolls and subsequent
changes and pictures
Challenge II: Convert the flying device that flies in a
straight line into a device that can fly in a circle using the
same roll chart.
What would be considered the analogous structures or
devices in this simulation? Why
What would be considered the homologous
structures or devices in this simulation? Why?
How was convergent evolution
represented in this simulation?
The Roll Chart was intended to mimic random mutations, in
what ways was this consistent with evolutionary theory and it
what ways was it not?
How could this activity be
improved to better simulate
evolution?
