Fresno City College
The Surgical Technology Program
This program is designed for selected students
who wish to prepare for a career as members of
multidisciplinary team caring for patients in
the operating room and in surgical practice
settings. The program is a combination of
academic study and clinical practice in
metropolitan hospitals. A Surgical Technician
earns $30,000 - $48,000 annually.
The Surgical Technology Program
The Surgical Technology program is accredited
by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied
Health Education Programs. Successful
completion of the Surgical Technology Program
qualifies a student’s eligibility to take the
Association of Surgical Technologist’s (AST)
National Certification Examination.
Students will Learn:
 Skills
necessary to enter workforce as a
Surgical Technician
 the
required surgical supplies,
instrumentation and equipment for
general surgery and specialized surgical
procedure.

Certification
Students have the option of obtaining one the
following:

Associates in Science Degree will be awarded when
the Surgical Technology Program requirements and
the FCC general education requirements are
successfully completed.

Certificate of Achievement will be awarded when the
Surgical Technology Program requirements are
successfully completed.
Recommended Courses
There are no required pre-requisites to apply to the
Surgical Technology Program, however, the following
courses are highly recommended to be completed before
entering the program:





Human Anatomy (Bio20) &Human Physiology (Bio22) or
Biology 24 (Human Anatomy & Physiology)
Microbiology (Bio31)
Medical Terminology (HIT 10)
Pharmacology (MA 2)
Public Speaking (Com 1), or Interpersonal Communication
(Com 2), or Group Communication (Com 8)
Eligibility

Must have a cumulative college GPA of a 2.0

Have no physical impairment that would
preclude the performance of all surgical
technology duties.

Enrollment preference will be given to veterans
and their spouses.

Enrollment preference will be given to Workforce
Investment Board clients.

There are no restrictions to age, sex, race, or
marital status.
Steps to Enroll
Student who are interested in being selected for the Surgical
Technology Program must do the following:
 Apply
for admission to Fresno City College.
 Complete an
application to the Surgical
Technology Program. Applications will be
available beginning June 1, 2011 in the Health
Sciences Division office (HS-1) front desk.
 Submit a completed
application packet to the
Health Sciences Division office (HS-1) by July 15,
2011 for the January 2012 class.
Application Process
Student must submit the following with the
application:
 One
official sealed transcript from SCCCD and/or
two official sealed transcripts from all other
colleges attended.
Program Start Dates
The Surgical Technology Program will be
starting a new class in:
January 2012 – 2nd cohort
Please note – After the selection of the spring 2012 Surgical
Technology cohort has been selected, the program will be
temporarily on hold until further notice or grant money is
available. Please keep updated with any future announcements
on the Health Sciences web page under “Important Updates.”
Selection

There will be a total of 20 students selected in the
month of December prior to each new program.

A computerized random lottery selection process
may be used in response to more eligible applicants
than enrollment space to the Surgical Technology
Program.

The selection results for all candidates will be posted
online at www.fresnocitycollege.edu at “My lottery
status / results” within the Health Sciences Division
website. Students are required to check online for
selection results according to the timeline posted.
After Selection Process

Only selected candidates will be required to attend a
Mandatory Orientation for entrance into the
program.
Background Check

There will be a required thorough background check
for all the selected Surgical Technology Program
students.

The Background Check is required after an invitation
for admission is received & not for applying to the
program

Students must have clear criminal background
checks to participate in placements in clinical
facilities.

A new background check will be required only if you
have an interruption in your education process
Background Check Cont.
Background checks will be based on:
Seven years history (may still be denied based
on offenses appearing on criminal record which
occurred more than 7 years ago).
 Address verification

Sex offender database search
 Two names (current legal and one other name)
 Three counties
 Social Security Number verification

Background Check Cont.
Student may be unable to attend clinical facilities
for the following convictions:

Felony possession and furnishing (w/o certificate
of rehabilitation)

Felony drug and alcohol offenses (w/o certificate
of rehabilitation)

Class B and A misdemeanor theft

Felony theft or Fraud
