FEBRUARY 2014
Author Visit
We were very lucky to have author Kate Maryon with us this week. It was a last minute visit so on this occasion
she only got to spend time with Years 5 & 6 but it was a fabulous afternoon. Kate gave a very inspiring talk to us
and was very brave in sharing her stories of a troubled childhood. Thank you so very much to all of you that put
your hands up and joined in with the discussions and told stories of your own troubles. And to everyone that sat
and listened so well, I am very proud of you all! There is a full report on Kate’s visit in this half-term’s school
newsletter. I do have copies of Kate’s books in the Library – they have ALL been taken out already but they are
available for anyone to loan just like a normal library book – if you can catch them!
I am trying hard to secure more authors, illustrators, poets, artists and other inspiring and talented people to
come and visit us as often as possible so keep your eyes on the Library news for upcoming events.
Book Allowance and Library Rules
Most books have now been returned by those who had 2 out on loan. Only a few people still need to bring a
book back so please can we all have a good hunt in classrooms, at home and in lockers to check for any
outstanding books and bring them back after half term.
It’s also important to point out to everyone that Monday, Wednesday AND Friday are quiet days in the Library for
reading and homework ONLY. Lots of people are coming in to do just that so it is important for all the people
using the space to be respectful of those that would like relative quiet in order to concentrate.
First Book Sale a HUGE Success
We held our first book sale in the Library at the end of January. This was very popular – and very busy! Most of
the books we had to sell were gone by the end of break so thank you to everyone that came and made a
purchase. In total we made over £50 which is money that goes back into the Library for new books and supplies
so we all benefit! We will continue to take old books off the shelves so everyone has the chance to buy a book of
their own for as little as 10p. The next book sale will be held on Friday 28th February so we’ll see you there!
February Competition
The Pupil Librarians have been working hard on our new display area in the Library and the first theme they
have chosen is LOVE – a nice reminder that Valentine’s Day is just around the corner!
To tie in with the loving feelings in the air, this month’s competition is all about the books and characters we love.
Come down to the Library and pick up a heart template and fill it with all the things you love about books and
reading! My hearts will be filled with Lemony Snickets Series of Unfortunate Events, my favourite Roald Dahl
book ‘The Twits’ and my favourite character – Haymitch Abernathy from The Hunger Games.
You can fill your heart with pictures, quotations, a book review, a character profile – the choice is yours. There
will be housepoint prizes for the best, most imaginative entries and every entry will be displayed in the Library.
The competition closes on Friday 28th February – one week after half term – so lots of time to get a great entry
ready! Good luck everyone.
World Book Day and Book Fair
Plans are being put in place for what is shaping up to be a fabulous celebration around World Book Day this
year. More news to come next month so watch this space for details of the day’s events. The Travelling Book
Company will be with us straight after World Book Day and I will be sending a letter home nearer the date with
your £1 Book Token to spend at the fair. Needless to say, our last Book Fair was a huge success and I will soon
start badgering everyone to come along this time and hopefully make even more money for new books!
