What are high school credits?

 In the United States, a student in a high school earns

credits

for the successful completion of each course for each academic year.  The state sets the minimum number of credits required to graduate.

More about credits…

• • At RHS, where all courses are the same number of hours and meet every day, students earn 5 credits for a course that lasts all year, or 2 ½ credit per course per semester. Earning credits is a function of having both passing grades and sufficient attendance!

Graduation Requirements:

The state of NJ requires a specific number of credits for graduation.

If you fail a course, or if you exceed absence limits, you lose credit for that course. There is NO PARTIAL CREDIT !

But what about…

Sickness?

Family Emergencies?

Parents can write a letter of appeal, which will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Possible consequences for losing credit

 Not graduating on time  Class rank is impacted  Having to attend summer credit restoration

RHS Course Waiver

Raritan High School Parent/Student Course Waiver Dear Parent/Guardian: Teacher recommendations are based on the teacher’s judgment of your child’s best chance to succeed in that subject area. There are many factors which contribute to a teacher recommendation. If you disagree with the recommendation made by the teacher, please indicate your preference(s) below and sign and return this form to your child’s School Counselor. It is important that you and your child review the terms of this waiver outlined below.

Students who choose to waive into a class against the recommendation of the teacher may not request to be removed from the course until after the middle of the first marking period. A student requesting to be removed from a course listed below must make the request in writing to his or her counselor. The Director of Guidance and other necessary administrators will review each request on a case by case basis. The student is expected to be in good standing in regards to coursework (including summer reading), attendance, and behavior at the time of the request. Please note that any change in a student’s schedule is based upon course availability and may have an impact on the student’s original schedule.
