This guidebook..what to
expect
• This is meant as a reference tool.
• It is a learning and experiential process to fully
understand the Second Harvest Food Bank Santa
Cruz County…this is but a small part of that
journey.
• Upon review of the material, you should
understand our goals, who we are, how we
operate and how YOU can fit in…
• At the end, we hope you will share our vision and
decide to share a bit of you with our cause.
What we stand for…
Our Second Harvest Mission:
To end hunger and malnutrition by educating and involving the community
Our Vision and Goals:
Santa Cruz County will be a healthy community where no one goes hungry or has
their life opportunities limited due to malnutrition.
•
By 2022, we will eliminate childhood hunger and instill lifelong healthy eating habits to ensure a
bright future.
•
By 2022, we will reduce obesity by 10% in Santa Cruz County through access to good nutrition
and education.
Our Values:
Food banking demands a lot from the people committed to it. These are the organizational values we
prize most highly to achieve our mission:
•
•
•
•
•
Empathy and respect
Opportunity and justice for all
Community engagement and empowerment
Teamwork and collaboration
Trust and accountability
Our strategy:
We leverage our network of 200 agencies, programs
and their 3000+ volunteers to provide over 500
nutrition classes per year and to distribute over 8
million pounds of food annually to working poor
families, children and seniors.
Our strategy has been successful. We:
–
–
–
–
Provide 4 meals for every dollar donated
Distribute over 6 million meals a year to families in need
Help feed 55,000 people a month, half of whom are kids
Distribute 5 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables
to improve the diets of our clients
Second Harvest provides food to 200 agencies and programs
The Second
Harvest Network
feeds 55,000
people monthly
Feed hope in
our
community.

Care to join our
team?
Best way to understand what we are all about and how best you can fit
in while feeding your “soul”… go through our mini-orientation. Get to know our team,
our agencies, the programs and our campaigns.
Where to start? Here is a recommended 120 day assimilation plan…to get you going.
1. Meet with Willy our CEO and do the tour of the food bank within the first 2 weeks.
2. Sit down with your Mentor (board mentor or committee mentor) to review the Orientation
packet – they will:
• answer questions, show you the website, the blog, how to navigate to get information,
and discuss ways to get involved
3. Visit two agencies in the first 90 days
4. Volunteer in a program in the first 90 -120 days
5. Meet with COO Brooke to walk through operations process from receiving to distribution.
• Brooke and her staff could also assist in scheduling visit to two agencies in first 90 days
and volunteering in a program in first 90 days such as Food For Children
6. At the end of the 120 days – report back to your Mentor on your observations and how we
can improve our on-boarding/ assimilation processes.
