Target Sector 2: Alternative Energy


Elkhart County #12 in Indiana counties for potential
renewable energy component manufacturing
Existing Business Base:


Roughly 300 fabricated metal, machinery and plastics firms
Roughly 80 firms have potential to make wind, solar or
biomass or geothermal equipment components
Results from Year 1 Strategic Planning
Year 2 Demonstration Phase –
Elkhart County Poplar Project


20 million wood panels imported annually
Goal: Establish local source of hybrid poplar wood
grown on network of former industrial sites

Reuse 5-acre vacant site for tree farm and nursery

Plant 20 additional acres in 2012 & 2013
Green Opportunity:
Public Brownfield Sites
6,500 poplar trees planted in May
2011 can be harvested in 6-10 yrs.
Keys to Success



Outreach to individual manufacturing businesses
Seed $ from EPA (& National Urban Community
Forestry council)
Help from partners and forestry expert

Housing Foreclosures

Foreclosure percentages in various states in September 2010
C & D debris is the #1 source of landfilled
waste in Cook County, Illinois
Salvaging more of these materials can
create green jobs in deconstruction
