Aims and Objectives

• To introduce participants to the full range of electronic journals and scholarly databases available online • To demonstrate the range of electronic resources available —in particular those in use within the institution at present and/or available through the PERI programme • To provide hands-on experience on using and accessing the range of electronic resources available

• To introduce and review the implementation activities associated with the resources available though the PERI programme • To examine copyright and licensing implications for electronic journal and scholarly database usage • To develop ideas, strategies and policies for electronic resource and journal management within a research library environment

A four-component programme: • Component 1: Delivering information • Component 2: Disseminating national and regional research • Component 3: Enhancing ICT skills • Component 4: Strengthening publishing

Component 1

• Providing access to scientific and scholarly information through electronic means. Includes – current Awareness databases – full-text online journals – document delivery – directory of free online databases, journals and articles

Component 2

• Support to the strengthening and development of access to journals from developing and transitional countries as a medium for the dissemination of research results – TOC and Abstracts service – AJOL – Full-text service – AJOPP – Document delivery service – Publicity for local and regional research – Monitoring and evaluation

Component 3

• Enhancing ICT skills through travelling workshops: – Using the Internet – Electronic Journals and Electronic Resources Library Management – Web Page Design and Authoring, leading to Library Web Pages – ICT Troubleshooting for Librarians and Information personnel

Component 4

Strengthening publishing • Workshops for journal editors, typesetters and managers covering – preparation of journal content – production of journals – management of journals • Online publishing programme • Publishing partnership programme

About this Workshop

• To train library staff in using and managing electronic resources • To evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of electronic resource use • To develop training materials that can be cascading down within an institution • To help students, academics and researchers to access electronic resource effectively

• Hands on—instruction, practise and support • Activity-based group work • Cascading resource for use in the library, lecture room, here and elsewhere • All materials are available for free on the Web for ongoing use after this workshop
