Welcome!
Today we will discuss:
• Changes made to offer a reduced seat time
classroom
• Statistics showing students are doing fine
• Use of LaunchPad to take advantage of the
learning resources
Elementary Statistics Course
Class Materials Utilized
• Moore, McCabe and Craig, Introduction to the
Practice of Statistics, 8e
• StatTutor Lectures in StatsPortal
• Homework problems from end of sections online - with unlimited attempts
• Labs and project as before
Reduced Seat Time
Class structure
• Face to face hours reduced from 4 days of 50
min. periods to 3 days of 50 min. periods
• Flipped classroom approach
– Student questions and requests for examples
– Hard test questions from past done in groups
– Short case problems in design of experiments
and observational studies
Examples of class activities
• Large data sets (approx. 200 data points) for
histograms and boxplots that students do in
groups. The normal intimidation factor was
diminished.
• Case studies allowing students to develop
experimental designs in class. Each group had
a different case for sharing their design
toward the end of the period.
Grading
• 20% StatTutor and homework
• 20% Labs and Project
• 60% in class paper and pencil tests
(proctored)
What Works
• Students like having more control over time and
their grades through StatTutor and online
homework
• Students are more engaged in class with small
group activities
• Having a highly-supported StatTutor experience
followed by online homework (that provides a
lesser amount of support) means students are
aware of what they don’t know
Grades similar to previous semesters
