“ India does not have problem of
unemployment but unemployability. “
- Dr. Kalam
Engineering Students and
Unemployability

Unlike occupational or technical skills,
employability skills are generic in nature rather
than job specific and cut across all industry
types, business sizes, and job levels from the
entry-level worker to the senior-most position.

The industry requires new graduates who
understand the part they play in building their
organisations, and have the practical skills to
work effectively in their roles.
Engineering Students and
Unemployability

We need professionals who are responsive to
economic, social, cultural, technical and
environmental change and can work flexibly and
intelligently across business contexts.

It means engaging with the organisation and its
goals, understanding the dynamics of the
workplace, and taking up a job role with an
informed knowledge of its requirements.

Who are the achievers?
• Everyone sets goals but an important
distinction is that the top achievers are very
intentional, focused and committed while the
rest of us are not.
• Persist! That’s the quality true champions are
made of.

profitability?
 Why did the company hire you?
 What do you do that produces 80% of your
results?
Low Pay-off Activities

Team work
The rules for work are changing, and we’re all
being judged, whether we know it or not, by a
new yardstick—not just how smart we are and
what technical skills we have, which employers
see as givens, but increasingly by how well we
handle ourselves and one another.

Relationship
Three Magic Tools
There are three tools that will help you to make
every relationship work:
 Respect
 Helpfulness
 Understanding
Respect
• Respect the person you work with.
• If you don’t like him / her, and still need to work
together, make the effort to find at least one nice
thing about the person.
• Remember, that no one is totally wrong or bad.
• Even a clock that does not work tells the correct
time twice a day!
Helpfulness
• Be genuinely helpful.
• Remember the objectives of a professional
relationship – achieving the organizational
objectives and goals, in a positive and
proactive manner.
• So, there is no room for personal agendas and
score settling. Pettiness like – “He didn’t help
me when I needed it, so why should I do it
now?” – needs to be left behind in the
childhood.
Understanding
• Involves, first of all, listening.
• Listening with an open mind, and nonjudgmentally.
• Understanding also involves empathy.
What is Relationship Management?
It is all about being great at your interpersonal
skills and relating effectively with others. People
who efficiently use their interpersonal skills
always:
 Get the best out of a relationship.
 Handle difficult situations with ease and
enthusiasm.
 Behave in a situation centric way, and not a
people centric one.
 Separate problems from people.
 Focus on solutions rather than problems.
Why?
• “Others” are others…… you could have come
across this attitude several times.
• But you begin to change when you realize that the
relationship you have with them indeed affects
your work life as well as your personal life.
• This prompts you to “understand others”.
• What does “understanding others” mean?
Understanding Others
The first step to understanding others is learning
about them. In organization context, managing your
relations with your colleague could mean 2 things:
 Knowing what you need from him
 Knowing what he needs from you
We can learn more about others when we disclose
our selves. Self-disclosure is seen as a useful
strategy for sharing information with others. Also, we
build trust and rapport.
Team work
A team is a group of people who are working
towards the same goal.
A good team works well together, has attributes
such as flexibility and synergy, and achieves more
than the sum of its' parts.
