School Work: Commuters Errands/shopping Recreation/fun Exercise/fitness Sport/Club/Weekend Warriors Racers/triathletes/training ACTIVITIES OF AN ADVOCACY ORGANIZATION Engineering: Creating safe and convenient places to ride and park Education: Giving people of all ages and abilities the skills and confidence to ride Encouragement: Creating a strong bike culture that welcomes and celebrates bicycling Enforcement: Ensuring safe roads for all users Evaluation & Planning: Planning for bicycling as a safe and viable transportation option BENEFITS OF CYCLING IN YOUR COMMUNITY health benefits economic benefits reduced traffic, impact on infrastructure positive impact on air quality A FEW STATISTICS… If American drivers replaced just 1 four-mile car trip by biking 1x a week for 1 year it would save more than 2 billion gallons of gas. A FEW STATISTICS… The average annual operating cost of a bicycle is $308 versus $8,220 for the average car The average American spends 16% of their income on transportation, more than healthcare or food. Cycling reduces this cost. A FEW STATISTICS… Because of significantly reduced physical activity, this is the first time in recorded history where a generation will have a shorter life span than the generation that preceded it. A FEW STATISTICS… Growth of Cycling: Between 2000 and 2010, the number of bicycle commuters grew 40% nationwide. Not everyone drives a car… 33% of Americans do not drive.
