Key Point Summary
Exercise is physical activity with the aim of improving
fitness and health.
Training is a planned programme of exercise designed
to achieve targets related to fitness and skills.
Training produces short-term effects and long-term
effects.
Short-term effects are changes in the body which only
last during exercise .
Long-term effects are positive changes on the mind and
body which remain long after exercise has stopped.
Key Point Summary
Some short-term effects are:
 The muscles start to work harder, requiring more
oxygen and producing more carbon dioxide.
They produce more heat which begins to make the
body sweat.
 The brain detects these changes and sends a signal to
the heart and lungs to make them work harder.
 The lungs take in more oxygen and remove more
carbon dioxide. The heart pumps more blood.
