the seas.
Study Questions
p. 54
1. How did Elizabeth I handle the internal religious struggle
and what does the expression “middle way” mean?
–
Elizabeth underwent a sort of religious compromise managing
to steer the Church of England a middle way between
Catholicism and Protestantism. Practically, she chose to stay in
the middle without supporting either Catholicism or Puritanism
( an extremist sect that had developed from Protestantism).
2. What was Elizabeth’s maritime policy?
–
Fully aware that a powerful fleet and overseas trade would
bring wealth and prosperity to the country, she encouraged the
growth of the navy and the development of trade companies
and supported exploration.
3. Did the “Invincible Armada” really prove to be invincible?
–
No. The Spanish fleet was first defeated by the light British navy
and then destroyed by heavy storms. This victory greatly
increased England’s prestige and self-confidence.
