The idea to
celebrate
Christmas on
December 25
originated in
the 4th
century.
History
Christmas Day is celebrated on December 25. Many people look on
Christmas as the time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, but really
the tradition goes back to the earliest of times. In those days the sun
meant so much to primitive man that when it began to go lower each
day till December 23, people thought the sun was going to die out
and they were worried. They ate less keeping the food for the next
year. On December 23 the sun stayed in the sky longer and longer
and after that the nights were becoming shorter and shorter. When
this happened, the primitive man was very happy. He even felt he
wanted to celebrate it. Later it became a tradition to celebrate it at
the end of December with presents and plenty of eating. Now a
Christmas tree stands in everybody's living-room at Christmas. In the
earliest of times green trees were symbols of life.
For most British
families, this is the
most important
festival of the year,
it combines the
Christian celebrity
of the birth of
Christ, with the
traditional festivities
of winter.
SANTA CLAUS
•The original Santa Claus, St.
Nicholas, was born in Turkey
in the 4th century.
•He was the patron saint of
sailors and children.
•The Dutch spelled St.
Nicholas as Sint Nikolaas,
which became corrupted to
Sinterklaas, and finally, in
Anglican, to Santa Claus.
Different legends passed across the ages to make the
present day Santa Claus. Immigrant settlers brought
Father Christmas to the United States . Father’s
name was gradually changed to Santa Claus, from
the Dutch name for Father Christmas, which is Sinter
Class. Although he has origins in Norse and preChristian mythology, Santa Claus took shape in the
United States. Americans gave Santa Claus a white
beard, dressed him in a red suit and made him a
cheery old man with red cheeks and a twinkle in his
eye.
Christmas Tree
One of the main symbols of Christmas
in most homes. Relatives and friends
may join in trimming the tree with
lights and tinsel. Presents are placed
under the tree. On Christmas Eve
families open their presents. Many
children believe that Santa arrives
on Christmas Eve in a sleigh pulled
by reindeer and brings presents.
Some children hang up stockings so
Santa can fill them with candy, fruits
and other small gifts.

Celebration in THE UK
 Every year the people of Norway give the city of
London a present. It’s a big Christmas tree and it
stands in Trafalgar Square. Central streets are
beautifully decorated.
 In the afternoon English people may watch the
Queen on television as she delivers her traditional
Christmas message to the United Kingdom and the
Commonwealth.
 Most families decorate their homes with brightlycolored paper or holly and they usually have a
Christmas tree in the corner of the front room,
glittering with colored lights and decorations.
Celebration in the USA
 Long ago, each child hung a stocking, or sock,
over the fireplace. Santa entered down the
chimney and left candy and presents inside the
socks for the children. Today the tradition is
carried on, but the socks are now large red sock
shaped fabric bags still called stockings. Each
child can’t wait to open his or her eyes to see what
Santa has left in the stockings.
 People in the United States and Canada decorate
their homes with Christmas trees, wreaths and
ornaments. City streets are filled with colored
lights; the sound of bells and Christmas carols can
be heard everywhere.
