Assignment 1 due: Sept. 19
• Create a pencil value scale
with a range of 7
Value
Value is an element of design.
Value is defined as the lights and darks in
an art work.
Value can be black, white and ranges of
grays.
Value can be a color and the lights(tints)
and darks (shades) of that color.
Create a value scale
1. Use a ruler to draw a 1 inch by 7 inch
rectangle. Center on the paper.
2. Use a ruler to divide the rectangle into 7
equal blocks
Create a value scale
3.One end of the scale will be the darkest
value (black).
4. The other end of the scale will be white.
Create a value scale
5. Each of the center blocks should show
the gray value scale making a transition
from white to black.
6. Each block must be a different value.
Use the Pencil to apply values
The pencil value should have a smooth
surface. Use light, smooth strokes and
build up the value by overlapping layers of
pencil.

• Use contour line to draw a pair of
athletic shoes in an interesting
composition. With a drawing
pencil and kneaded eraser add a
range of values to the shoes.
Compose & draw shoes
1. Block in large shapes to
compose/arrange on paper.
2. Use contour line to draw the
shoes.
3. Add many details for realism.
Add a variety of pencil values
1. Identify the lightest areas of the
shoes and add light values.
2. Identify the many gray areas of the
shoes and add many different gray
values.
3. Add black and dark grays.
4. Smooth the individual value areas.
