A Vital Part Of A Healthy Life
Handwashing History
1854-A group of 39 nurses were sent from
England to take care of the wounded
soldiers in Crimea.
 The head nurse insisted the doctors and her
nurses wash their hands and that the latrines
be moved away from the ‘Hospital.’
 Florence Nightingale was the first woman
to receive the British Order of Merit.


 Introduced handwashing among doctors in
1848
 Death rate of mothers fell from 18% to 1%


CDC estimates that one out of three people don’t
wash their hands after using the restroom

 40% didn’t wash in Penn train station in New
York City
 54% of men and 11% of women didn’t wash
at an Atlanta Braves Game

Importance of Handwashing
Handwashing is the most effective means to
prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses
which cause infection and foodborne illness
 Data taken by the CDC between 1988-1992
showed that 514 of 2,874 foodborne disease
outbreaks were due to poor personal
hygiene


one person to another

the body to germs

When To Wash Hands
Before starting to work with food,
equipment, or utensils
 After handling raw meats, fish, poultry &
before handling any other food
 After handling dirty utensils and equipment
 During food preparation as needed

When To Wash Hands
After eating or drinking
 After coughing, sneezing or blowing your
nose, touching your hair or face, etc.
 After using the restroom
 After touching bare human body parts
 After using tobacco products

When To Wash Hands
After taking out the
garbage
 After handling animals
 After touching money,
doorknobs, computer
keys, telephones, etc.

How To Properly Wash Hands
Turn on faucet (Memory Song???) ABCs,
Happy Birthday, Row, Row, Row, Your Boat
 Wet hands with water and dispense soap
 Rub soap between hands and wrists to create
suds – Manipulations 6 + 1 minimum 30 sec.

(1)10 friction motions on each palm with fingers
and thumbs of hands interlaced
 (2) 10 friction motions to back of each hand with
fingers and thumbs of hands interlaced


thumbs of hands interlaced
 (4)2-friction motions per digit (fingers
and thumbs)
 (5)10 friction motions per wrist

 (6) Pinch fingers together and rotate in
palm of opposite hand 10 times / repeat
on other hand
 (+1=7) Using your thumb nail clean
under the nails of the opposite hand under
running water / repeat on other hand

 Hold so water flows from wrists to fingers
Apply suds to forearms and complete 10 friction
rubs to the four sides of the each arm (Doughs)
Use fingernail brush if needed (must be sterilized
between uses
Rinse arms and hands
 Hold arms so water flows from upper arm
toward hands

Dry hands with 1 paper towel
 Use paper towel to shut off faucet
 Dishwashing, pan washing, and vegetable
cleaning sinks should not be used for
handwashing without sanitizing sink

