PWLS SIG
• Area of Interest
– the “practical” definition, movement, and storage of E&P well
log data.
– This group is essentially a cross-vendor, cross-product line
user community for well log data store, data conversion, and
data transfer products.
• Players
– operators, service and software providers, government
agencies, consultancies, and POSC.

• Active POSC members include:
– Oil companies: ExxonMobil, Shell, Hydro, Statoil
– Non-profit: US DOI, Norway NPD
– Commercial: Baker Hughes, Flare, Halliburton/Landmark,
Oilware, Paradigm, Pathfinder, Schlumberger
• Other attendees included:
– Oil companies: DONG (Denmark), Shell, Anadarko, BP,
Burlington Resources, Oxy, Pioneer Nat. Resources
– Commercial: LogTek (Norway), National Oilwell,
PetroData, ROQC, Tellus Software, Adaptable
Technology, DrillingInfo, GTS Geotech, Volant Solutions

PWLS SIG
– Evolved from PWLS project Phase 2
– PWLS Project published Version 1 standards in ’01
• 6 major types of acquisition well logging tools addressed
• 3 major service companies involved
• Classification
– Good: based on broad taxonomy of property (measurement) types
– Issue: taxonomy was proprietary
– Issue: alternate classification was also adopted

– SIG Meetings started in ’03
• More players; more oil company players
• Clear need to resolve classification issues
• Focus shifted to oil company calculated
– PWLS Version 2 released in ’03
• POSC now has rights to the property (measurement) type
taxonomy
• The alternate classification was eliminated
• Class attributes were added to enhance searching
• Joined and Interpreted curve mnemonics defined
• Supported in PPDM V3.7 work

• Interest expressed in expanding the coverage of acquisition

• BakerAtlas: RECALL support for PWLS to be upgraded from
Version 1 to Version 2 in early ’05
– RECALL is a product in its own right and it is the also underlying
engine beneath PetroBank from Landmark.

– Complete processing of Shell’s Change Requests
– Expand Acquisition Curve Classification Coverage
• More types of curves
• Additional acquisition service companies
– Improve user documentation and Web Service functionality
– Continue work on Calibrated Image specifications
• Pending review of initial results
