English I

• Introduction to literature (world, American, British, etc.) – Novels – Short Stories – Poems – Plays – Research Papers

Materials Required

• Notebook with dividers • Notebook paper • Pens/pencils/highlighters • Flash drive – Extra Credit: • Computer paper • Kleenex • Paper towels • White board markers • Pencils/pens/paper

Absence Policy

• If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to make up the work no later than

2 days

after your absence.

– You will find the makeup assignments on the front board by my desk. – Do not expect me to find you and beg you to make up your work; you must come to me!

Late Work

• I do

not

accept late work of any kind.

– If you do not have the assignment on the day and time it is due, you will receive a 0. – NO EXCUSES.

Expectations

• You are expected to follow the RHHS code of conduct (see handbook).

• You are expected to also follow the “ laws of the land, ” posted on the bulletin board by the window.

Maid Service

• Pick up after yourself! • Class will not be dismissed until the room is clean and tidy!

– Books on bookshelf are neat – Nothing on floor – Desks clean – Nothing under desks in baskets

Tardies

• If you ’ re not in the threshold of the door by the time the final bell rings, you ’ re TARDY!

• You ’ ll begin to get ISS after 3 tardies.

• If you ’ re late to class, you need a note.

Food & Drink

• No food or drink without permission.

– You MAY have water & gum as long as you pick up after yourselves • If you prove to be responsible, snacks may be allowed with prior approval

Cell Phones & Electronic Devices

• NO cell phones or Ipods allowed at any time!

– Once the bell rings, I will confiscate any visible cell phone, ipod, headphones, etc.

• You get ONE warning, then I send the device to the office where it is held for a week, month, semester, etc.

Language

• There will be times where vulgar and less than PC language is prevalent in our literature.

– This does NOT mean you may use this language toward each other in my classroom!

• Speak correctly and maturely; do not use excessive slang or vulgar words. You are in English class and are

supposed

young adults. Act like it!

• I know not everyone likes each other.

• In this room, you will leave your differences at the door and tolerate each other for the 90 minutes you ’ re in here.

• There will be no fighting in my classroom. You are here to learn, not act like rats in the sewer.

Seating & Classroom Rights

• You must earn the

right

to sit where you • Until your class can earn these rights by being respectful and responsible, assigned seats and a strict class structure will exist.

Bell Procedures

• The bell does not dismiss you, I do.

• When

everyone

is seated in their desks, I will dismiss the class. – You will NOT line up at the door like cattle.

– You will NOT be dismissed until everyone is seated, quiet and things are clean.

• I will usually let you pack up a few minutes before the bell rings.

– Please do not pack up until I tell you to!

Consequences

• Verbal warnings • ISS • Parent/teacher conferences • Administration conferences • Counseling • Suspension/Expulsion • Detention – Consequences depend on the severity of the breach of guidelines. It ’ s best to just do what you ’ re supposed to!

Hall Passes

• You will receive 3 passes a quarter.

– When they ’ re gone, they ’ re gone.

– You may not leave after you ’ ve used these 3 passes.

• If you have any passes left at the end of the quarter, each is worth a free 100.

– EX: If you have all 3 passes, you get 300 extra credit points.

Extra Credit

• I will offer an extra credit assignment for each unit.

– This assignment won ’ t be “ easy.

” It will require work and time/effort.

– If you complete the assignment in FULL, you will get credit. – Credit is applied to any low grade (zeros are never replaced with extra credit).

Tutoring

• I am available for tutoring almost every day before/after school.

– Please schedule tutoring times before hand!

My Schedule

• 1 st • 2 nd block: block: English 1 English 1 • 3 rd • 4 th block: block: Planning English 1

• Extracurriculars:

– Prom Committee – Zumba – Horse Training

What Do You Mean by Journal?

• Every day or every other day there will be a topic on the board for you to reflect on in your journal.

– Each entry must be at least 1/4 page long – Each entry must be dated with the day ’ s date • You will have a chance to share your journals for extra credit in the participation category

What is SSR?

• SSR stands for Silent Sustained Reading – That means you read without talking for a set amount of time!

• SSR will last for 20-30 minutes a day – You may read books, magazines or newspapers for SSR – You may NOT read ipods, homework or literature books

What Happens After SSR?

• Once a month, you will turn in a “ book report ” about the SSR book you have been reading.

– You will be given a guideline sheet for the requirements for this book report.

What

s the Deal with Vocabulary?

• You will be responsible for having your vocabulary words defined with parts of speech by Wednesday of each week.

• You will have a quiz on the Vocabulary words on Friday of each week.

• When we complete the entire sheet of words, we will have a test on all of the words and then receive a new set of words to begin on.

More on Vocabulary

• You will be using your vocabulary words in the classroom as well as in different assignments.

• When you define your words, write the simplest definition possible and make sure you include the part of speech (N, Adj, V, Adv)!

Sorry, but, you ’re not that special…

• If you are absent on a day that a journal, SSR reflection, vocabulary check or vocabulary quiz is due, it is due the next day you return. • If you do not follow this guideline, you will receive a 0.

• You are all special in your own way, but not that special… the rules still apply to you! 
