Plot Chart
A plot chart represent all the major
parts of a short story or novel.
This is
basically
what a plot
chart looks
like.
Climax: The highest point
of interest or suspense
Rising action:
the building of
suspense
The exposition:
the beginning
Falling action:
as the story
wraps up
The
conflict
Resolution: how
the story ends,
what happens to
all the characters
Exposition
 The part of the story that introduces the
characters, the setting, and the basic situation.
 The setting: where and when the story takes
place
 Situation/Climate: The basic situation, when
the story begins what is going on? What is the
feeling or tone?
 Characters: Who is the main character? Are
there many characters? Which characters are
minor (or less important)?
Conflict
 A struggle between opposing forces.
 Ask yourself: what is the fight or
problem? Who is fighting with whom?
Why?
Rising Action
 All the events that add to the suspense of
the story are a part of the rising action.
These events lead up to the climax, or
the point of greatest suspense.
Climax
 The highest point of interest or suspense.
 This is the part of the story where you are
on the edge of your seat, waiting to find
out what happens. You wonder: what’s
going to happen? Who is going to win?
How is this going to end?
Falling action
 This comes after the climax. Once you
find out who did what, who wins, how the
excitement ends then the falling action
answers other questions. This is the part
where the story starts to wrap up. The
loose ends begin to be tied off so that the
story can end.
Resolution
 This is the end of the story. This is where
you get the “happily ever after” in happy
endings. Not all stories have happy
endings, and some stories don’t tell you
ever detail, but the resolution tells you
how the conflict is resolved, what
happens to the bad guy and what
happens to the good guy.
Other words to know
 The protagonist is the good guy.
 The antagonist is the bad guy.
 The theme is the central message or
insight into life. It is what the author
wants to tell you about life.
