PEER Loss Estimation Toolbox
Main goal of the toolbox
Development of a user-friendly computer tool, referred to as
PEER Loss Estimation Toolbox to conduct seismic
performance assessments of individual buildings.
In particular the toolbox is aimed at conducting seismic loss
estimation providing various quantitative measures of
economic and downtime losses in individual buildings.

PEER Loss Estimation Toolbox
Brief description of the toolbox
The PEER loss estimation toolbox has five main modules:
1. Seismic hazard module
2. Story loss functions module
3. Response simulation module
4. Loss estimation module
5. Disaggregation and visualization module

PEER Loss Estimation Toolbox
Brief description of the toolbox
1. Seismic hazard module
MAIN FUNCTION:
Allows users to import and visualize site-specific
seismic hazard curves.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
Based on geographic coordinates at a site obtains the
USGS seismic hazard curve at the site and provides two
simplified procedures developed by PEER to modify it
to account for local site conditions.

Brief description of the toolbox
2. Story loss functions module
Allows users to:
• Select built-in story loss functions for common
building types
• Compute story loss functions using
component fragility and loss functions
built-in
• Import and visualize story-loss functions
component fragility and loss functions.

3. Response simulation module
Allows users to import and visualize results of response
simulation (e.g., incremental dynamic analyses)
computed with OpenSEES or other simulation platforms.

PEER Loss Estimation Toolbox
How does the toolbox facilitates
getting to a larger audience
• It is a MS Excel-based tool that practically all people have so does not
require acquiring/learning a new software package

PEER Loss Estimation Toolbox
How does the toolbox facilitates
getting to a larger audience
• It has a very user-friendly graphical user interface

PEER Loss Estimation Toolbox
How does the toolbox facilitates
getting to a larger audience
• It has online “tip text” as one passes over the various interface objects
to facilitate learning its use

PEER Loss Estimation Toolbox
How does the toolbox facilitates
getting to a larger audience
• It allows easy-to-use “copy-and-paste” data stored in other Microsoft
products (e.g., a seismic hazard curve stored in a different Excel file)

Distribution/Dissemination
• Will be easy to distribute via email, website download, ftp download, etc.
Documentation
• Will be accompanied with a PEER report that provides full
documentation on how to use it with easy to follow step-by-step
instructions
Examples
• Will be accompanied with two fully documented examples, that user
will be able to reproduce for facilitating its use
