2014-15 State Testing
PARCC replaces PSAE
PSAE (Prairie State Achievement Exam) which was
formerly administered to ALL JUNIORS is gone and will be
replaced by Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for
College and Careers (PARCC).
 When: Spring 2015
 Who: ANYONE in English 3 and/or Algebra II
(Unlike the PSAE, which was administered to all juniors,
students in any high school grade will take these two
PARCC assessments in spring 2015 if they are taking either
Algebra II and/or English III this year.)

ACT? JCHS will still offer the administration of the
ACT to all 11th-graders at no cost to schools or districts
this school year on March 3, 2015.
ACT REGISTRATION




Register online at www.actstudent.org. Payment ($38)
must be made by VISA or MasterCard for online
registration. The Writing test is an additional cost of
$16.50.
Register by mail (packets are available in Guidance)
Most colleges require that ACT scores be sent to them
directly from ACT. You may have your scores sent to
FOUR colleges of your choice for the $38 registration fee.
Additional score reports at the time of registration are $12
each. Reports requested after registration cost $12 each.
ACT RETAKES



You may retake the ACT as many times as you wish,
up to 12 times. Most colleges will accept the highest
score….a very few may average the scores after
several testings.
Retake registration can be done by mail, online at
www.actstudent.org, or by phone 319-337-1270
(additional $14.50 fee).
You need only to fill out page 1 and 4 and a few
other items when registering for a retake.

Classroom Preparation
Teachers will review for the PARCC and ACT in several classes.
The ACT measures achievement in the classroom so students are
advised to take college- bound classes and work hard to retain the
material presented.

ACT Prep Workshops (various fees…..see Guidance for registration
information)




ZAPS Learning Company will offer an ACT Seminar at LCCC on a
Saturday in March (TBA )or as webinar. See www.zaps.com
SIUE in the fall (Nov. 1-Dec.6) on 5 Saturdays and also in the
spring (TBA) for $164. The workshops will be advertised in the

ACT & NCAA



The NCAA has adopted new legislation that will
require prospects who intend to enroll at NCAA
Division I and Division II institutions to supply
ACT or SAT scores to the Clearinghouse directly
from the testing agencies.
Test scores on an official high school transcript
will no longer be usable for NCAA purposes.
Put the NCAA code down for one of the
four schools to have scores sent. (Code
9999)
NCAA and Student Athletes

The NCAA also has new eligibility rules relating to
the required high school core courses for studentathletes.




Earn 10 by end of junior year
Need 16 core by graduation

How to be one?




ACT score (taken Sept. 2014-June 2015)
student’s class rank at the end of the 6th semester
(end of Junior year!). Approximately the top 10%
When do we find out? in Nov. 2015 after
high school’s submit information in Sept.
How much? Monetary awards are sometimes
awarded to JCHS IL State Scholars by the
District 100 Foundation but the amount varies
each year.
MILITARY



If you are interested in applying to a
military academy, you should take the
ACT in February and request an
application as soon as available.
Recruiters visit JCHS during lunch periods.

COLLEGE VISITATION

Colleges visit JCHS!!!! See announcements for which school is visiting each week!
See counselors for passes to attend college representative presentations in
Guidance, even now during Junior year! It is to your advantage to use this service.

COLLEGE VISIT:




Students will be permitted a total of 2 college days to be used beginning with the 2nd
semester of the junior year.(LCCC = only half day!) Not more than one day may be used
in a given semester.
COLLEGE FAIRS:




obtain a form from the main office attendance window prior to a college visitation day and have it
signed by all teachers, and returned to main office prior to missed day (see p.16 of handbook online).
This day will be a “field trip” and not an absence

Have 4 colleges picked out by March ACT test! College Applications take much time
and usually require a fee so you should have your choices narrowed down by fall as they are

education and training required, IL and national schools that offer that
program, scholarships, and interest profiles/surveys. Check your
schedule for second semester and begin planning courses for the Senior
year.
Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) also provides
“What’s Next Illinois” at www.whatsnextillinois.org
allows you to do high school, college, career and financial aid planning.
Be sure to take the classes necessary to be admitted to the college of
your choice.
