Calibration and
Dosage Calculations
Terms
• Active Ingredient
– Part of pesticide formulation that controls or
kills.
* Calibration
– Steps taken to determine output or delivery
rate of sprayer
* Delivery Rate
– Gallons of liquid that is applied, usually per
acre. A.k.a. - sprayer output – sprayer volume,
application volume
* Carrier
– Added to concentrated pesticide during
manufactuer. Talc, clay, water
* Diluent
–material used to dilute pesticide
concentration at time of appliction - water
* Dose
-A.k.a rate or labeled rate. Amount of
pesticide to apply – per acre
* Field Speed or travel speed
- MPH at which application takes place
* GPA
-Gallons Per Acre – sprayer output – spray
volume
* GPM
- Gallons Per Minute - nozzles
* Labeled Rate
– dose. Pesticide per unit of area to
control a pest.
* Swath Width
- Width of spray pattern as it appears
over target area
* Test Strip
- area used to determine sprayer output
-LxW

CALIBRATION
TEST STRIP METHOD
Step 1
Set up a test strip (L x W) = ft2
How much liquid (Gallons)
is applied per strip?
Convert to acres: ft2 x 0.000023
Or
ft2 .
43,560 ft2
Step 2 – Set up a simple ratio

Test strip = 20 feet x 30 feet
Gallons applied = 0.60 gallons


 20
 30
43.56 OR 44 GPA
600 ft2 x 0.000023 = 0.138 Acres
Test strip = 15 feet x 15 feet
Volume applied = 32 ounces
32 ounces  128 ounces per gallon
= 0.25 gallons
0.25 gallons x 43,560 ft2
225 ft2
=
48.4 or 48 GPA
Test strip = 15 feet x 15 feet
= 225 ft2 = 0.0052 Acres
Volume applied = 0.25 gallons
0.25 gallons
0.0052 acres
= 48.07 or 48 GPA

Sprayer calibration = 50 GPA
How many loads will you need?

????
gallons
.
50 GPA

How much
pesticide do you
add to each load?
1st and 2nd load = 500 gallons each = 1000 gallons
500 gallons
50 GPA
= 10 acres x 1 pint per acre.
