Preterite of Stem-Changing Verbs
As you already know, many verbs that are
needed to talk about past actions and activities
are stem-changing verbs
We already studied that –ar and –er verbs that
stem change in the present tense follow a
normal pattern in the preterite.
However, -ir verbs that stem change in the
present tense also stem-change in the
preterite but in a different way.
Preterite of Stem-Changing Verbs
e > i pedir
pedí
pidió
pedisteis
pediste
pedimos
pidieron

dormí
dormiste

Preterite of Stem-Changing Verbs
In the preterite there are two types of stem
changes: e > i and o > u.
This stem changes occur only in the thirdperson singular and plural forms.
This stem changes are often indicated in
parentheses next to the infinitive:
pedir (i,i); divertirse (ie, i); dormir (ue, u)
The first set of vowels refers to stem changes
in the present tense; the second set to the
stem changes in the preterite.
Preterite of Stem-Changing Verbs
Only –ir verbs that are stem-changing in the
present tense are also stem-changing in the
preterite.
Here are some common verbs of this type:
1. ie, i verbs: divertirse, preferir, sentirse
2. i,i verbs: despedirse, pedir, repetir, seguir,
servir, vestirse
3. ue, u verbs: dormir, dormirse, morir
